I am looking into buying a LG G6 while Verizon's deal is still going on. One thing I couldn't figure out in the store had to do with the fingerprint scanner. Do you have to press the home button on the back to unlock it, or can you just place your finger there like some other phones?
I have the A5 2016 and its a fantastic phone. Still getting updates occasionally even after a year. I haven't tried the Galaxy J7, but I understand it's a step below. I wouldn't expect it to get the newest updates.

More to set it apart from other phones. Especially with Google assistant no longer exclusive. Would be nice to have a really unique and striking design.
I would likely prefer the G6. I've held the V20 a few times, and it feels enormous in the hand. The biggest thing I think you would miss out on is the quad dac in the US version, which may or may not matter to you.
