Just to close the loop on this, Google replaced my 6P with a new one, and everything is just dandy. I got to test the device backup and restore feature and all my apps were automatically installed on the new phone. Very happy customer!

I used the support function to call Google and they said they have heard of no such cases, but will RMA the phone. Unfortunately the link in their email to me does not work. I will pursue the replacement route and other than this hiccup the service so far has been quite good.

My 32GB 6P has failed this update 3 times this week now, I am stuck on MDA89D. It automatically detects the update, and when it reboots to install after about 3 seconds I get the Dead Android Error screen. When it boots, I get the 'New OS' message, which leads to the 'System Corrupt' message...
