Good thought, but this is the way I've been doing it (using the back button) and I often get the dreaded white screen "loading" delay.

I'm using K-9 Mail rather than the Gmail app for this very reason (so I can delete a single message in a conversation). I really find it hard to believe that this option is not available in the Gmail app but I sure can't find it.

This was driving me crazy as well. Try this. It worked for me: 1. Download the free app "Quick App Clean Cache" from the Android Market. 2. Run the app and click the "Clear all" button on the top right. You'll need to do this every so often but it should solve your problem.
