There's also a Default USB Configuration setting under Developer Options that you could try to play around with, if for some reason from the phone end it seems to only ever want to recognize for charging.

Plug the phone into the PC via USB cable. Prompts on the phone and/or the PC should then guide you the rest of the way.

My Samsung A21 would seem to drain really fast whenever Android Auto connected. I think it had to do with the constant background navigation going on. On a long trip, even haven it plugged in for USB wired Android Auto and charging wouldn't really keep up for the drain. My newer Samsung phone...

I basically have do not distribute almost always on, and then within the do not distribute settings I allow (via use of starred/favourite contacts) only those to ring through. Vibrate or not is I think also settable within do not distribute.

For me, that setting isn't there.

I feel your frustrations and basically agree with you. However, it's not unlike most apps nowadays in terms of throwing something out there to see if it works with what warts and such. At least for this the user can choose (I assume, not 100% sure since the update in question hasn't yet arrived...

Yeah it's basically my SMS replacement also right now, and for slightly better security. My guess is Google is trying to see if folks want to use RCS in a manner similar to how some use for social media chat apps. And, if some of those types of features will attract people to it, or even away...
