You would need to be rooted as far as I know. Then you can perform a backup easily. I don't know any way to do a full device backup without root. Don't be afraid to ROOT. Especially on Samsung it's a breeze.

I don't think the keyboard makes much of a difference. Some ROM's I'm sure aren't as supportive of it as others but all/most should work. Samsung are easy to root. Have you looked at xda?
