Have been looking at Tasker, reading around trying to figure out if it can do it, but not easy to get head round. Had a look at IFTTT, can send it an email but nothing there to launch an app.

I see, can an app read the notification bar when a new email arrives? The other alternative to email is sms alert - I've just managed to configure to get sms text alerts as well as email. Does an app exist that can detect a new sms and be able to launch a 3rd party app?
