A recent Sprint internal memo confirmed a bug with the messaging app when connected to a wifi source with a name that has special characters in the name (anything other than letters). Update was coming. Might have been in the last update this past week. I haven't seen what all it was supposed...

There is a known issue right now on the S4 that will force close the messaging app if you're connected to a wifi source with any sort of special characters in the name. Update is on the way from Samsung. That might be what you are seeing.

Try a different messaging app like Handcent.

Handcent (and probably others) will allow you to set a different notification sound per contact. Get into a thread with the person you want to assign a new tone, then click the settings button top right, and then select notifications.

Not sure if it will help the OP, but you can download maps to your phone ahead of time and use them without data.

If you are using gmail, I know you can install Handcent and pull it off. Probably a number of other ways. In gmail, settings, select the account, Sound and Vibrate, click Sound, then use Handcent when it asks what program to select to the ringtone. You can pick any .mp3 on your device.
