How do you turn that sensor off? I know I can use speakerphone but I don't really want to use it in public

All the motion gesture are switched off so it's not that??????

When I get a voice mail I push play and when I put the phone up to my ear the voice mail shuts off and phone goes to the lock screen. The only way to hear my voice mail is on speaker phone. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I guess it has something to do with the phone screen shutting off...
