Does the Note 3 have the S4 IR capabilities? What if any other features do the 2 models share? E.g. camera apps, etc.

sammobile.com had an article about a developer's version of the GN3. Meaning it will be unlocked. I will be full price and so buying only really makes sense if you were going to pay full price anyway to for example keep unlimited data.

Beanstown106 the developer recommends formatting external cards as FAT. Do an internet search for methods and tools to do so. Easeus Partition Master home version is free and effective formatter but uninstall it right after using it otherwise it pops up ads to buy other stuff.

Boat for the excellent text and graphic rendition (always just the right size or a tap away) and the easy to use GUI. Dolphin has pretty good rendition and GUI as well

What crystals and where'd you get them?

Yes I get better results indoors and in low light using Scene mode set to Party/Indoor. Also you get better photos with Metering set to Center Weighted. Someone posted a good GN2 camera guide here on Android Central. which a search should turn up.

I find the back of the Commuter too slick. If it was grippier it would be just the ticket. Perhaps I could put something grippy on it.

You can still use Helium but I prefer Titanium Backup. Many people use Adam Outler's one click Casual method (at xda or Google it) for root which also takes the extra step of unlocking the bootloader so that you can flash custom roms. I'm not sure about a method that only gives you root for...
