Just tried it for you and I didn't notice any performance issues. Tap 3 times to magnify works. You can also adjust display and text size on these phones if you want to leave everything big without having to tap.

Read a thread about this on Google's own Pixel support forum. Messages team said they are working on it and the feature will be back soon.

I've turned mine off for now but have notifications on and tap to wake. You still get notified with AOD off but it does go off after several seconds.
