I have been on Verizon for the past 4 years but hopped off our family plan in order to get the new Evo from Sprint.

Well now that the Droid X is coming to Verizon, I'm wanting to switch back to Verizon. Coverage is generally way better in my small town area with Verizon than Sprint. Matter of fact, I'm roaming with Sprint.

How do I go about switching back to Verizon from Sprint. I am still within my 30 day "trial" with the Evo. If I return my phone and cancel my part of the plan, I'm just an added line on my brother and sister in laws plan, will I get charged crazy for cancellation fees?

You should only get charged for the time used on the line. So no cancelation fee due to you being within the 30 days. So if its an add a line which is 9.99 then that extra 10 for that "data fee" you would prorated for what you used. Hope that helps!

I know this is barely on topic, but no one else seems to be discussing this.

So not only is it the X vs. the Evo, but it's VZW vs. Sprint, really.

With sprint vs. VZW, we get:

- calls to (any) mobile for free vs. calls to just VZW phones
- free calls to any phone starting at 7pm instead vs. 9:01pm
- a phone upgrade every 12 months vs. every 24 months (only valid if there's a better sprint phone than the evo in 12 months)
edit: evidently plans over $49 a month get a 12 month upgrade with VZW as well.
- savings of $10/month = $240 total savings

but X vs. Evo

- much better video performance from X
- very nice car and MM dock for X (wtf when are these coming out for Evo?) vs. pretty cool kickstand.
- no front camera on the X (not sure I'd use this much)
- X rear camera is an unknown, but there is a mic on the back for video recording that the Evo does not have (I have small children so I do record video occasionally).
- no screen separation/light leaks on the X so far (on my Evo, the screen is a bit loose on the right side)
- skype vs. fring? (I've never used skype though)
- HTC vs. Moto (I actually thought I prefered HTC over Moto, but with all the limitations and defects in the Evo, I'm not sure which way to go on this)
- Evo is rooted and should have Froyo very soon (Is the X rooted yet? - if not, I'm sure it will be soon).
- Sense vs. Moto's new UI. I actually like sense here.

This is really a tough call for me. The X seems to be the clearly better phone, but the Evo is a very capable phone itself, so it's not like I'd be missing out on a whole lot. I don't game on my phone (wtf), but I do watch a lot of movies. Sprint seems to be the clearly better provider in this case (even with the $10 premium/month).

Have I missed anything? If this is the final tally, I think I'm going to stay with the Evo and see if there's a better phone out in 12 months for Sprint.

Good point Gimik (and Verizon/Moto have already said the X will get 2.2). Though Sprint has a better deal usually, at the end of the day a Verizon plan will cost me about the same. I have been trying many different phones over the past month trying to determine what to get. What I really need is a phone - one I can make calls with because the ATT service I have had for the past year has not been good at that! Both the Droid and Inc did not have as good of call quality as the EVO. Not network related, hardware related. And my gut tells me to go with Verizon for the long run in network quality. So, I can take the EVO back next week and wait until the 15th to get the Droid X or just sit tight for a few more months because I could probably sell the EVO to break even on the ETF in I switch to Verizon later on. But I have been impressed with what the early reviewers have said about the X so far.

I did not know about the 12 month upgrade. With the number of phones dropping, there will surely be something newer, yes?

Verizon also allows annual upgrades to those who are signed up with My Verizon and have a voice plan of 49.99 or higher and the primary line on all family plans.

Does the Sprint premier upgrade program allow everyone on the plan to upgrade or just the main account? We currently have three Evo's on one plan.

ok, so the upgrade thing is equal on both. that's good. So really, i'd only be saving $10 a month, the free mobile to mobile calls (I don't really call much) and the 7pm free nights (again, I don't call much). which means I'd only be saving $10/month. (Oh, and there's the 4G thing, but there's no 4G planned any time soon in AZ as far as I can tell)

Damn, this is hard. I might have to return the evo and wait for the X (not having to wait for the evo is another point in its favor though).

Gimik, regardless if you get the Evo or Droid X, i'm giving the slight advantage to the Droid X, in 2-4 months there will be something even better seeing how smartphones are rapidly advancing now a day.

oh I know. If I wasn't in my 30 days, it wouldn't bother me at all. I'm just trying to get the most for my money while I can. Right now, that looks to be the X.

Sprint is also way way way cheaper than Verizon for DATA and the plans.

For me to go to Verizon, I would be paying $200+ for 3 phones, 2 of those being X's. For me to go to Sprint and get the EVOs, I would be paying around $130-140 a month.

Choose your carrier first. If you are primarily roaming with Sprint at home/work, you shouldn't use Sprint. Sounds like you should go VZW. Sprint is a great option in markets they are strong in otherwise and in 4G markets, you can get up to 7Mbps and simultaneous voice/data.

Yeah, I'm just home for the summer so it's not a big deal. Where I will be when school starts back up has great Sprint service.

I personally like the EVO more as a phone than the Droid X. I've been fortunate enough to be able to play with a Droid X and its a REALLY solid phone. Feels fast, nice camera but it's just too big for me personally, even though its thinner. If Sprint service is good in a majority of the places you're at, I'd stick to it.

Waiting to hear whether the X has a signed bootloader. That's the main reason I'm not going with the X, as I want to be able to flash custom roms. With the Milestone not able to fully root yet, I'm afraid the X will suffer the same fate.

The only thing I fear is giving up the front camera...i just know it will be able to call iphone 4 folks in the near future...

I am also curious to see what updates to the EVO will bring. Is there one coming next week? And will 2.2 bring performance enhancements similar to the X?

Evo pluses - Sprint plan is cheaper. Sprint TV (world cup !!!)
Minuses- I am not getting good 3 G reception in San Fernando Valley and in my home. Therefore the battery life is dismal (worth then Pre), actually, I don't know if I have a battery problem or not because of this. 4G if I am not getting 3G will 4 G work there?
Wifi, I don't know if Droid X has good WIFI capabilities, but I know that Evos are bad- I have to be on the top of the router to get a good signal. (while my Pre+ shows full wifi bars) Apparently Droid X also is faster processor.

Either way, whether you have an EVO or X, you have a really good device. I think that it really is a situation where you have to compare the carriers. I love Sprint because they are cheaper and have better services in my opinion. I have lived being with Sprint over the years. I also like having a 4G device.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again - always go with the best service for you and then choose your device. Plain and simple.
