can someone tell me if the Wireless Tether app is reliable? I depend on my Tether app for my BB, quite often it is my only internet access connection. it opens everytime and works every time and is never flakey.

did I read that if an update gets pushed it could make the app stop working? then the app needs reloaded with an update? this would be bad if I'm somewhere I don't have other access. I'm trying to understand.

If you are worried about the update then I would wait for rooting. Chances are you won't be able to do a OTA updated rooted, or it will require rooting again which might require different steps. Also Tethering tactics might change since the wifi tethering will be built in and disabled in 2.2 so that you can use Verizon's version of it.

as long as you dont go crazy with the bandwidth, i doubt verizon will even notice. there are people on these boards that have said they routinely use over 5 GB's per month, and verizon has not said a word to them. now i wouldnt tempt fate that much, but if you can keep things below 2 GB per month, they probably wont even notice

Agreed. I regularly use over 5gb and know plenty of people who do aswell. I have never been called or asked. Plenty of people sit on their phones and watch youtube, stream pandora and browse web as if they didnt have a computer. People who are not using tether eat up 5+gb of usage so do not worry unless you start gaming or downloading alot of videos/porn etc... I believe if you use over 10gb twice it might raise a red flag.

Just FYI while Verizon chooses not to pursue free tetherers as of now, there's a big difference between Verizon not detecting tethering and Verizon not being able to detect tethering. Even if there are smart tethering apps out there that know they should spoof the TTL (time to live) on the packets (the easiest way for Verizon to count tethered packets differently), there are plenty of dead giveaways at the application layer (Have 2.1 and watching flash? Busted! Watching Silverlight content? Busted! Downloading MS Windows or OSX updates in the background? Busted! Forget to munge your browser ID? Busted!). Even without these giveaways, one of the most interesting areas of research includes NMAP's TCP fingerprinting which can identify an OS from the packets it generates - impossible to spoof efficiently and surprisingly accurate.

From my perspective getting caught should Verizon decide to start caring about tethering could result in getting kicked off the network and being stuck with AT&T's sad Android excuses or even being back billed for the tethering charges. While probably safe, so is driving to work without a seatbelt. Most of the time. $20 a month is a good insurance policy by my reckoning but YMMV.

Is there a good browser for my laptop that automatically emulates a mobile browser, I am looking to lessen the strain on my tether while using a laptop by not surfing on a full browser.

You could try to use a command line browser, say lynx, which would really cut down on the amount you browse. Alternatively, you could either set up the emulator (although browsing on it is painful imo), or you could tweak a few settings in firefox's about:config (or other browsers version of about:config) to make it seem as if it's a mobile browser.

Modifying the browser ID will only modify what it tells other websites it is, not the browser behavior. Opera Mobile has an emulator that looks interesting:
Opera Developer Network | Opera Developer Tools

Of course if this is in response to my post above, it's not enough to hide that you're tethering - just something that may reduce bandwidth.

Thats what I want, is bandwidth control. Not so much hiding the tether as I know there are tells in software and packets that are much easier to see than just too much data download.

I like speed over beauty in my browser, especially on the road. So hence me wanting to kill the images and increase browser speed.
