My friend has an Optimus V and when you plug it into the pc, it'll charge but won't connect so she can mount the phone. I've tried many different things to try to figure out the problem, and have resorted to asking here.
I also have a V and using the same cable and computer mine WILL mount. I've tried reformatting the sd card, putting her sd card in my phone to see if it would connect (it did). USB debugging IS on, and phone IS rooted. It starting doing this about a month after she rooted it.
Does anyone have ANY idea what is wrong with it? Thank you for your time and help in advance.

Sometimes depending on what kernel you're using for your custom rom, it can cause problems with things like connecting to the computer. Its probably a kernel issue, try a different rom and kernel combo. Harmonia works well as does Bumblebee.

She isn't running a ROM. She's still on stock.

but you said she rooted, right? I've had some issues in the past with different android phones sometimes connecting and sometimes not, which was extremely frustrating, but with the optimus v and many of the current custom roms and kernels its quite reliable. Since she's rooted, maybe its time to try out a custom rom.

Try using a different USB cable, I tried forever to get a friends phone to connect with no luck. Installing and uninstalling drivers and what not with no luck. Tried a different usb and it instantly worked.

To connect and mount the sd card you need to have usb debugging turned off. Only turn it on for using an adb command window. For moving and viewing files on your card you need to have it turned off so you can mount the card as drive on your pc.

USB debugging has been off. And nothing.

And I wanted to put a custom rom on it, but in order to do that, it would have to be able to sync with the pc.
We've tried different cables. I'm starting to think it's just her phone.

Mine won't connect to adb. It's completely stock, haven't cracked into it yet. Wanted to get the msl using adb, but driver doesn't work. Installed directly from lg update tool twice. I can mount it as storage, just no adb. Would a new kernel take care of this issue?

You stated in your first post that the phone is already rooted. Do you have a custom recovery installed? If so, you don't need the pc to flash a rom. Download the rom you want to your phone, move it to the root of your sd card, and flash using recovery. If you are still running the stock recovery you can use the recovery flasher posted in this forum or terminal emulator to flash the proper recovery for the rom you want. If you need help with either of these options, simply ask. Remember, Google is your friend. Do your research first and read EVERYTHING. TWICE

That's not true. You can leave debugging on and mount the sd card for mass storage mode. The only drawback to having debugging enabled all the time is that any computer you connect to can access everything on your phone, especially if you have rooted it.

For the USB mounting problem, I've experienced it at times too. I've only experienced it on custom roms, and my solution was to re-flash the rom. This isn't an option for your friend since they are still on stock. If you are merely trying to flash a custom rom and do not care about fixing this problem, then manually put the necessary files onto the sd card (either through wifi or by removing the card and placing it inside your computer). Then complete whatever guide you are following. If you cannot get adb to work either, install terminal emulator from the Market and type in all of the commands by hand on the phone itself. I'm sure that once you have a fresh flash of a rom, this problem will go away.

Thanks for the help. It installed adb driver, but the phone doesn't have a port assigned to it. LG Mobile Update tool states phone is not connected. I can't see it in QPST or Device Manager. Optimus S works fine

UPDATE: Rooted, installed Reborn 2.1 and Everything Fine. Must be the stock Kernel not giving access. Thanks for all the help!!

Might be nice to say *how* you resolved the issue. This thread is among the first to show up in a google search for the same issue.

I am now guessing that it must be something with my phone. Every once in a blue moon will I be able to connect. The problem started when my phone was only Rooted. It did not have any custom recoveries or ROMS on. Just the stock screen. The only reason I can think of now is that one of the pins on my phone got messed up or something.

I would like to try and install the AOSP, but that is a pain in the butt to install. I bricked my phone because of that. I'd sure like to have 2.3 though. Rom Manager is just plain stupid, they are such greedy people whoever made it.

Go to page 221 of the aosp thread on xda. They links to the flashable .zips for the 601 build. You can use the xionia recovery to flash it and the gapps, or use the recovery linked on that page.

This started happening to me today as well. Reflashed with 20110601 aosp. Still not working properly. If I keep trying, after what seems like 20 or 30 tries I finally get the "usb connected" notification.. Truly strange. Going to try a different ROM and see what happens.

UPDATE: Flashed with Bumblebee 2.4. Still not working properly, I got it on the 12th try.

UPDATE 2: Flashed with Harmonia 1.3. Still not working properly, I got it on the 8th try.

UPDATE 3: Went back to my stock nandroid backup. Still not working properly, I got it on the 2nd try.

I'm tired, gonna hold off on anything else and sit on my stock nandroid until some posts are made.

How exactly did you disconnect and retry? I have tried on stock, reborn, aosp and get nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been disconnecting and reconnecting and trying different usb ports and computers

I just pull and reconnect my USB cable until I get the notification on my device.

Oh and just FYI, I'm back on asop.

If you ever have the same problem again, try toggling the USB debugging on/off in rapid succession. Works for me.
