Hello Android Central members,
I seem to be having some difficulty in rooting my Samsung Galaxy Ace phone. I understand the basic steps involved in rooting, and have followed the according to directed instructions for this specific phone. I start the phone up in recovery mode, select 'apply update from SD card' and choose the root files in their .zip archive. In a few seconds, it tells me that the update has been applied successfully and I reboot my phone. However, upon rebooting there is no Superuser app, and Root Checker Basic tells me that I do not have root access.
Using ES File Explorer, I've looked in system/xbin but it does not have the files it should have installed after the root (i.e. busybox, sh, sqlite3, su, su-v1, su-v2 and su-v3). I have tried multiple root archives, but none are working and I am clueless as to what I'm doing wrong.
If it's of any use, this phone previously belonged to a friend of mine who has tried to root it whilst he had it, but was facing the same problem as myself.

Phone details:
Model number: GT-S5830
Android version: 2.3.6
Baseband version: S5830XWKT3
Kernel version: 2.3.65.7-perf-CL787041root@DELL86#1
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWKT7

Thanks for any help. It would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Skyborn

I'm not sure how to do that. Do you mind explaining how I should go about doing it? And am I correct to assume doing so will erase all data?
Thanks.

;) Okay, I done a search on Google... (Google is your best friend)
And I found this:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256228

The baseband of your phone looks identical to the one on this forum.

The problem you are having looks like is related to your phone being locked by the network you using.

My suggestion to you is to read that thread and follow the advice provided in there.

Check if your device is unlocked.
-If is locked by the network?
Than make a search for unlocking methods on Google and you can also search in the "play store" for any app that is capable to unlock your device...

You should also do a search for the instructions on how to use Odin on your device to flash firmware.

Odin instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969

Odin thread in this forum:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?t=311706

As for precaution you should always have a backup copy of the firmware you are using just in case something goes wrong with your device after rooting.

Search for firmware for your device (GT-S5830) in here:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/

Yes it will erase your data.
You need to back up your data before you do this.
-Use Kies to backup your phone on your PC.
-Google backs up your contacts and apps.
-All the data in your external sd card is safe and unaffected.

Good luck

Smokey

I've finally managed to root my device! ^_^
All I had to do was flash the universal unroot, then the ThinkDroid remover (found in the forum link you provided) and then the universal root, and I now have root access.

Thank you for your help, I greatly appreciate it and I cannot thank you enough. You've helped me a lot, so thanks! :3
