Due to various circumstances I have to use a sort of bulky case on my note and I'd like the knock feature because the case comes very close to the home button sometimes making it annoying to use.

Knock On would be very nice. I love that feature on my G3 and more than a couple of times I forget and try to Knock On one of my other phones.

You can do knock off with nova launcher and screen off app.

I played with my coworker's g3 and I did not enjoy the knocking. It was just weird to me. Lol

I miss a home button!! I have an M8 and I hate having to tap the screen to get it to wake up! I should have never left Samsung

How?

Install any of the turn screen off apps. Then set the double tap (or any other that you prefer) gesture in Nova to point to that app.

If your on kitkat still and your are rooted, there is a xposed module that will allow you to have that feature.

Why is it better to knock on your screen to wake it up as opposed to pressing one button?

Seems like you'd need to press that button a lot over 4-5 years to wear it out. I just don't keep my phones nearly that long.

The S View case works well. Don't need to knock or press anything, just open or shut it. And with the stay 'on while you're looking at it' feature I've forgotten about needing to tap screens to stay bright. I'd recommend it for ease of use.

Quite simply in order not to wear out said button.

To add knock feature so not to wear out the button is a major stretch of a reason. Especially since worn buttons haven't even been an issue......
