I have been using AVG antivirus on my note 4. Is it really necessary or is it another battery eater? What do you think?

I don't and I disabled the Lookout included on my AT&T Note 4. I've never had a reason to need it or its resource drain.

Nope. I believe in safe browsing and behavior as being the best protection. Mobile devices push the envelope of performance with these tiny processors so taxing them with the overhead of anti-virus software to account for my behavior is not desirable to me.

If all you use your device for is general browsing of mainstream websites (no porn), stick with applications from reliable sources (play store and you read through the reviews prior to installing), and practice safe email practice (don't open attachments that you weren't expecting without examining the context of the message) then you shouldn't need anti-virus software.

Running kaspersky. I had an extra license after installing the multi device version. Just prior to that used ESET mobile security. Why you may ask? Donno, just cos I can. That said, I haven't noticed any battery drain. On a different note, do apps like SD maid or SU battery saver have untoward effects?

I don't usually find antiviruses help a lot on mobile, I just try to be careful with websites I'm visiting. My dad's phone had a weird malware that pushed him to download random malware apps. It was a nightmare.

Lookout is the first app I install on my phones. Since I always use it it's impossible for me to say if it's worthwhile or not. According to the Lookout app I've never had a virus or malware and I don't go online much. I'm well satisfied with both the performance and battery life of my N4 so I'll keep using Lookout.

Android is not safer than any other operating system and as it becomes more and more dominant in the world it will get hacked more and more IMO. Thus I have tried a number of protection programs and settled on Bitdefender by subscription because it comes from a well respected company in the security business, doesn't hog resources or burden the battery while providing protection. I did find one app that tested better than all the others but it is only in beta, is a battery hog, and has absolutely no tech support. If those things change I would seriously consider it as my security software.

I had lookout on my Note 3 and it seemed like it slowed it down. Haven't tried it on my Note 4. Of course I'm not going to shady websites to really worry about it much.

I use Sophos Antivirus & Security on my phone. It seems to be light on resources and battery, has web filtering (on native browser and Chrome only) to block sites based on categories (adult, spyware, known phishing/fraud websites, etc.) and a bunch of device based protection settings (loss & theft, privacy/security advisor).

I use the WebRoot Anywhere Premier. I have that on my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop & it allows me to use the protection on 3 devices. I like WebRoot & have had good experience with them. Its simple yet feature full. I always have something installed on my phone, since at times, I need to do some banking from my mobile. I haven't noticed any slow down with my N4.

I use Lookout Premium since it's free with T-Mo's JUMP program. I have it set to scan apps that I download, a daily scan, and safe browsing and it doesn't seem too taxing on my battery.

BitDefender is the best. It's small and very light on the resourses. The free is okay, 7/10. But The paid one is 10/10. And u can search on-line for free 12month's license give-aways and promotions. i got a spare too
