An alternative would be to pick up one of many available VR headsets. I personally use the Habor headset as my VR viewer (a few times a week I might add) and paired with the Gamesir bluetooth controller, my setup provides great amount of entertainment.
If you do go with another VR headset, try and get one with a magnet input so it's compatible with Cardboard apps out of the box. If not, no biggie, as some controllers (such as the Gamesir I mentioned) has a built in mouse mode, which in Android, translates to a touchscreen input (that's what the magnet on VR headsets do). With that said, good luck with finding a VR solution!
