My wife and I both have a Note 3. We have multiple vehicles we drive and a micro usb charger in each as well as AC micro usb chargers in the house. If I switch to a Note 7 it appears that I will need to either buy a handful of adapters or a separate charger for each vehicle........anyone else running into this problem? Why did Samsung go with the same charger port they have had for years????

Because USB C is the future and what most manufacturers are switching to. It sucks to buy new cables or adapters but I'm sure USB C will stick around for a while.

If you don't want to buy the adapters, just buy the cables. The charger is the same. Unless, you don't have those adaptive charging heads, then you best bet is to get those Aukey car and well chargers. Great stuff.
