Sorry to ask dumb question but how long does the s pen tip last and when should you change it

No such thing as a dumb question. It all depends on your experience and frame of reference.
I'd use it until it starts to get inaccurate...
You can dial *#0*# to get into service mode and check the accuracy there..

That *#0*# doesn't work on my note8

My Note 2's S Pen is still perfectly functional.

However, Samsung did decrease the diameter of the SPen compared to those old ones (I think they made it sharper around the time of the Note 5?), so not sure about these newer ones.

There are always extra, so you could chang it out of needed.

Chances are, if you ever do need to replace on, you can but you may never get the chance to replace another. These tips last an extremely long time. I've never had to replace one in any of my Note phones.

Works on Virgin Mobile too.

They wear down over time, but at such a slow rate I've never had to replace a tip on previous notes. The phone should come with spare tips just in case.

Out of curiosity I just swapped my pen tip out for the white one. I think I like it better. Feels more responsive to light touches.

Also I just handwrote this whole post with the s-pen.

So I got service mode stuck on the draw test where it is only a blank white grid. Any idea how to get out of that test?

Just changed to the white tip just to see if any difference, I do find it to have a better *grip* on the screen, prefer it to the black already

Be careful. When I did the S-pen test I couldn't get out of it. It wouldn't recognize the home key, a hard press home key or the camera. Not a fun few hours. I was stressed I had broken my phone.

Yeah I ended up having to double tap on the screen to bring up the "create note" and then tapping home there. Now my test is stuck on the s pen draw test. Oops.

I switched to the white tip earlier today and it seems to work much better with the tempered glass screen protector.

Be careful. When I did the S-pen test I couldn't get out of it. It wouldn't recognize the home key, a hard press home key or the camera. Not a fun few hours. I was stressed I had broken my phone.

I used google assist to get out. I just said okay google... and I could get out. Or just reset or restart your phone next time

It does come with spares as well as a little tip puller thingy.
