My on-screen keyboard will not open in a group message after Pie / One UI update on note 9

My on-screen keyboard (SwiftKey is default but it is the same issue for Samsung stock and gboard) will not open when clicking the text field in an existing group text. I can create a new group text with the same people to get it to launch in the existing message and reply from the notification, but no matter what I try it refuses to open my keyboard in the existing text. It will open on texts to single people. I rebooted and wiped my partition. I upgraded to pie tonight and that's when it started.
