Without a carrier, does Google maps offline allow the S3 to use the GPS for positioning? I will be visiting some Baltic countries with my Verizon S3 and have downloaded Google maps offline. The Verizon phone will not "work" in these countries, but I hope the GPS function will work.

Update: Found this from Mashable Tech: Offline mapping will become a part of Google’s “own global base map” and offer hi-res navigation without needing a WiFI or 3G or 4G connection. To use the feature, users will have to select the area they plan to visit before going offline, then download the map to their device. The familiar GPS tracking blue dot will still be there to help with navigation.

Yes, you can use the gps without data coverage as the phone is simply reading the satellites. Think about this... Many stand alone cameras today have gps tagging and they don't have any connection present. I've used gps while in Saint Martin, and for Google skymap, and it worked fine.
