Last week something happened and my phone seemed to unsync.. I have lost lots of contacts and it now won't sync with my usual gmail account. Not sure what happened.. now everytime I try to save a contact it offers me to save to phone, sim, samsung or google.. why can't I save to all at the same time, and anyway which is best to not lose it again in the future???
very confused, grrrrrrrr!!!!!!!
thanks

they are still in google right. can you not go to a pc with internet and log into your google account and see you gmail and contacts? thats the way not to lose them. your phone is a different matter

Joanne,
The first thing to do is to be sure you're seeing all of the contacts on the phone. Start the Contacts app, press the Menu button, and select "Contacts to display". uploadfromtaptalk1370100928635.jpgMake sure you have it set to All.
I'd agree that it's unfortunate that you can't save contacts to all the different sources, but since you can't your best bet is to save them to Google - that way, no matter what happens to your phone (it goes for a swim; gets lost/stolen; dropped/broken) your information is accessible.
There are also apps that you can use to make local backups to the SDCard if you are so inclined:
Easy Backup: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.mdroidapps.easybackup
Helium: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup
MyBackup Pro: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro
Depending on your carrier you may also have other options to save important content (for example, Verizon offers Backup Assistant + for that purpose).

personally i prefer saving to phone as it has more storage than sim card, also, sim card may get corrupted all of a sudden. i've recently changed sim card because the old sim just unable to get signal all of a sudden.

Thanks for this tip, even thought my phone menu was slightly different, thanks to your advice, I figured out how to display my contacts saved on both phone and SIM.
