is there a way to turn the audio notifications off while on the phone?

I've been having this problem since I got the phone. when I'm on a call, handset or speaker, doesn't matter, if a text or email comes through, my phone plays the notification sound no matter what setting the phone is on ( sound, vibrate, or silent). the person on the other end of the phone can not only hear the notification, but it disrupts any voice messages I might leave. it's very frustrating and I haven't been able to find the settings to turn it off if there are any. please advise
