Google ad in system 'Contacts' app?

Hi all,
My mother's S5 started behaving differently with incoming calls as of this morning. As a call was incoming, there was a new background she didn't choose (first attachment). Then, after she hung up, the missed call notification by the 'Contacts' app had an embedded Google ad for a slot app (second attachment).
None of her recently updated apps were suspicious (all big company apps), there was nothing I'd expect to be responsible. The lack of reverse image search hits for either of the attached screenshots suggests to me that this is a new issue.
Can anyone suggest a cause and more importantly a fix for this?

Can you give an example of some of the recently installed apps? Even "big company" apps can still be undesirable, look at Cheetah Mobile (CM for short) as one example.

What she's seeing is unwanted additional "payload" that came along with another app...
