Bluetooth ear buds stop playing media after a phone call?

I have new earbuds that pair quickly and easily. They work for calls and media, but they are inconsistent when one or the other gets interrupted.

For example, I'm listening to a podcast and the phone rings. I take the call and talk/listen thru the buds, then hang up. The media should resume, but not it no longer plays thru the buds. The device still shows paired, but the phone is now playing the audio thru the phone instead of the buds. I can power cycle the buds and it'll work again, but it all starts over the next phone call I get.

I don't experience this issue with wired headphones or bluetooth in the car. Perhaps this is an issue with just these buds, but I was hoping maybe someone knew of a setting or trick.

Try them on another phone. If same problem then you know.

I have the same issue, it does it with any earbuds, speaker, and my smart watch

I have a similar issue with my Note 9, which is still on Oreo.
Streaming music on my car's head unit and a call comes in
Finish call and hang up and media volume is at zero.
