Automated testing... Where to start?

I have tried to do automated testing of my apps in the past but it always led to frustration. I have a new app that I would like to add testing to. Do you use the android testing framework or something else for your apps? Any suggestions on where to start? Or how to start small?

Have you tried Appium ? It's multi-platform (Android & iOS) and pretty easy to use.
