The green dot means the contact is linked to IM chat. You'll also see a green dot on the contact detail in your contacts app.....

IM Chat meaning gTalk (google's Instant Messaging). It means they are on-line (or more likely, they have a google phone and you have their e-mail address saved in the contact info).

I always thought it meant that the contact with the "green dot" next to them was also on Qik video chat. hmmm...

Nope, it is Google Talk. I don't have Qik on my phone and still have the green dots.
