Massive Battery Drain on Samsung Galaxy S2 with JellyBean GB27

I had the same problem, lucky to get 3 hours after the 4.1.2 update. Called Boost, and was told to do the reset option on the phone, of course you will loose all info on the phone, so back up with google and it will be beter after, but now the phone locks up at idle sometimes, and I never know when until I go to use it! It turned a great phone into a ZTE warp! I do hope they come up with a patch fix! I even asked if there was a way to go back to ICS, but no there isnt. The other problem I have is screencap is no longer working... I loved that option.

I was just browsing the web on my phone. Battery was at like 41%. Then phone lost signal and straight up died on me. Tried to turn it back on, but battery was at 0%. Got into work and plugged it in and turned it on. Battery was at 51%.

Third time my battery has done something weird like this.

Absolutely same problem. Vodafone sent me a new phone with their install of JellyBean, which had the same problem. Major drain in idle (but at least it didn't get hot!) They have now given me an older IceCreamSandwich version with updates turned off.
Wow I'm please to have a rest for battling with Kies (which must be the worst corporate commercial software ever written) and reinstalling apps. Maybe a Sony Xperia next time.

Yup, Factory Reset fixed my problem too. I was primarily having a reset issue, but I was also seeing horrible battery drain and my phone was warm all the time. Turning off Google Now and using power saving had absolutely no effect. I backed up my apps and data then booted to recovery and reset. It stopped restarting and battery life is the best I've seen over the life of the phone!

I think I got my phone dialed in pretty well. Did most of the stuff stated above, got rid of some apps too. I don't use the phone for more than calls, texting and emails too. I think the phone does a good job of monitoring itself without the help of apps. I tried juice defender and power max and they seemed to cause more problems than fix. Got rid of Facebook and Photobucket also. Am using widget locker, Tesla unread plugin, circle battery widget, ClockQ, Quickshortcut maker and few others (Pandora etc) and power is just fine. Unplugged the phone at 4pm yesterday, light to medium use til bed, left it unplugged, light to medium use this morning and at 19 hours it was at 42% . I'm digging it.

Mine does the same thing, and it won't charge on ANY USB chargers anymore, it has to be a direct charger. The phone recognizes that it's plugged in but the battery keeps draining instead of recharging. I've tried doing a few power cycles, resets and even taking my battery out of the phone, nothing is changing. I can't even get into my settings because everything just randomly crashes. I'll just get an error message saying "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped". It crashes my avast! also for sure. I don't know what else to do.

I've had the same thing with my phone in Raleigh, NC. Signal just isn't there, or even if it is apps like the google voice to text will say there's no network.

I have reported the exact same issue, as well as detailing it in a recent forum post to solicit some help. I'm surprised that my post has over 350 views, but ZERO replies. I'm wondering if some people were turned-off by the length of the post, but I was trying to be thorough with my description. Meanwhile, I ordered a new OEM Samsung Battery that should be showing up any day now. I'll report back if that solves/improves my issue.

Here's a link to my original forum post, which I'm guessing you might find familiar, based on the issue you've reported above. Good Luck!

yeah good stuff man,
Another thing I forgot to mention in my posts is that I disabled some of the sprint apps that I don't care for (Sprint TV, radio etc.) But you have to be careful you're not gonna' affect other processes as well.

For anyone having really bad battery issues with the recent upgrade, how long have you had the device? Keep in mind that the battery does go bad and what you saw on day one, in terms of battery life, may not be the same today if the device was purchased on release day (or close to it). I recently had the same issue with my device (rooted with a ROM installed) and decided to take the plunge and buy a replacement battery (Anker) from Amazon. What a big difference in terms of battery life and actual battery life.

The $20 investment (could be cheaper) is nothing compared to how much I paid for the phone and how long I intend on keeping it. Something to consider for anyone with phones purchased at least a year or more.

I could not agree more. I got my E4GT within a month of the original launch. After seeing my original battery experiencing "The Bulge", I purchased 2 new batteries (non OEM) on Amazon. While they were better than the original, I also used them throughout the whole ICS debacle, which I believe created problems for those batteries, as well, which also both now experience "The Bulge". So, after experiencing major LoS and Battery drain issues detailed above, I bit the bullet and as a last resort ordered a new Samsung OEM E4GT Battery (luckily found on eBay for $10).

"Eureka"... My E4GT Lives Again! --- After receiving the new battery on Friday, I put the phone and new battery through its paces this weekend. I experienced zero Loss of Signal, no screen flickering or freezes (even when the battery was down to under 20%), no massive percentage drops and/or random restarts. Finally, I don't EVER recall my original battery lasting as long as this one is now. I played a 4-hour round of golf yesterday, running the GPS for that entire time and using my Golf Range Finding app, and finished my round with 71% battery still remaining. Previously, I would have had to change my completely depleted battery mid-way through the back nine on the course.

If you do ONE THING before giving up on your E4GT... Buy a brand-new, good, (OEM preferable) battery! --- This single $10 purchase has just held me off from even thinking about going to an S4 or HTC One until much later this year!

Mine did this. You should call Samsung. I had to send it in for repair. There is a problem with some USB jacks. Turn-a-round time for me was 9 days. If you have to have a phone in the meantime, buy a cheap one from your carrier and have your number and account transferred to it until you get the S2 back.

I got 8 hours+ with 34% left after using stock.

Also, if you're in an area that does not have WiMAX you might want to try turning off the Sprint Connections Optimizer. I found it was a huge drain on my battery.

To turn it off, go to settings, select More Settings, Mobile Networks, Connections Optimizer, uncheck the box.

This ruined my batter for the first day after the update.

I've seen nothing but amazing battery life, much better then before upgrading! I've posted how to do this but I don't think anyone searches on AC anymore.

See attached...

Welcome to all the new posters on this thread!!!

I agree with several posts regarding solutions. First, check to make sure you don't have 'the bulge' in your battery. I noticed a charging problem with mine. The bulge created a bad connection. Registered it being plugged in, but because of the slightly disconnected pins, it wasn't accepting a charge.

Second would be to do some kind of wipe to your device. Wiping cache in recovery is the one I would suggest first, then a factory reset. The reason: updates are often installed, what is considered a 'dirty' flash. This can cause problems because there is older cached files under the old ROM, and the OS is confused, and spends processing resources, which is battery power, to figure out a solution.

The connection Optimizer.....don't get me started. Uncheck the box, and I wish Sprint never came up with that evil, evil program.

I must say I too was very frustrated at my phones performance after installing the jelly bean update. Battery life sucked and phone was clitching, shutting down & restarting randomly, restarting when connecting to wifi to name a few. After researching various threads with people having the same issues I decided to do a factory reset of my phone as well as replace the battery. It is true that if you put your battery on a flat surface & spin it, if it spins freely it is time to replace it. New batteries are flat and should not rotate more than once depending on how hard you spin it. After the factory reset & battery replacement the phone is working like new and the battery is holding up as well. It is still early so time will tell but, I highly recommend doing this if you are having any issues after installing the jelly bean update.:D

Welcome to the forums!

Glad the fixes worked for you. Hope you are still enjoying the device.

4 days ago I had notification and I had upgraded my SGS 2 by OTA 4.1.2 firmware DXLSD. I had experienced just like you, my batt drained very fast. I did factory reset twice and I found that after I update SAMSUNG LINK (AllShare Play), my handheld become very hot at the back near cam and my batt drained very fast.
I did do factory reset again and I did not update Samsung Link ( AllShare Play) and installing my previous app one by one. Until now, my handheld is doing just fine.
Now my problem is my SD Card (San Disk 32 GB class 10), it become unexpectedly remove. I was wondering if I had to replace it because of the previous heat problem.

Btw, at 4.0.4, i can set several email accounts to my Contact. Now I had difficulties to set my Yahoo mail account contacts. Any idea to fix it ?
