What is this new square notification icon between the location and wifi icon? Is it for my AIRave?

It's not new - I'm fairly confident I had that icon once on my HTC One (V 4.1.2) - but I can't remember what it was

That is the NFC icon.

No the NFC does not need to be on. You can go into the settings menu and turn it off.

Personally, I have never had a use for NFC, and I don't miss it being turned off.
