1 Bought an unlocked samsung s8 unlocked direct from samsung, Now samsung send email to activate?

Bought an unlocked samsung s8 unlocked direct from samsung, then samsung send me an email reminder to activate the phone?

Can anyone tell me what's the purpose of this? why do i need to"activate" it if it's already unlocked? what does this dude? the email is not clear. it only states the following:

"We wanted to remind you that you can activate your new Galaxy S8 64GB (Unlocked) today directly on the Samsung site. With our new online activation service you don't have to visit a carrier store to activate your device. Simply click Activate below and your phone will be ready immediately after you complete the activation process"

You should be able to just put your SIM into the phone and it should work. (If you don't have an account with a carrier, or you don't have a SIM that can be snapped sown to nano size, you'll have to go to the carrier (or contact them some other way) anyway. But if you already have a SIM, just pop it in and see if it works.
