1 of us on VZW and 1 on another?

Trying to cut some costs I'm playing with some ideas and would appreciate your input. Paying $170mo for 2 phones (total 4G data) and only one of them is a smart phone is insane.

Our contracts are up in January and I'm in no rush to get back under contract. I do not want a new phone and don't believe hubby does either.
Husband has a dumb (flip) phone and that's all he wants so any thoughts on him moving to a smartphone please don't even bother to suggest.

He's got to keep VZW because he travels. It seems like we'd save $ if he kept a single plan with his dumb phone on VZW and I got a single plan with another provider such as AT&T or ??? Have been considering Straight Talk for myself and my Note 2 is compatible on that service
Should we expect connection or any other problems between us if we're on different carriers?

Comments on Straight Talk? It was my understanding this is VZW service using VZW towers but may not be any more? Thanks?

You really need to check out the maps or better yet ask people who have them for service! I can tell you att for me as been great! No issues at all on my end but I'm in the north east and we JUST got 4GLTE. Super fast! (Vermont)

Also using straight talk on Verizon towers is limited to select non 4GLTE phones, the note 2 won't work on StraightTalk with Verizon towers. You can use the note 2 on StraightTalk with att or tmobile towers, keep in mind no 4GLTE.

My suggestion, if 2gb is enough, move your line to the loyalty unlimited talk text and 2gb data plan for $60. Overage is $10-15 per gb. So even with overage of 1 to 2 GB, you would still be better off with this deal. Personally, I would get your husband a smartphone on the same plan. But if he didn't want a smartphone, just get the pageplus $40 unlimited talk text plan. If you want direct from Verizon, there are options, share everything single basic line is $40 with 700 minutes. Prepaid has a $35 and $50 plan.

Straight talk is limited to 2.5GBs per month as per their website in the small print at the bottom.

You could pickup one of the vzw tower smartphones from st for under 180. Sell your note on swappa.com or craigslist and your way further ahead. The st plan is 48... Includes taxes. The sale of the note will cover your new Sammy galaxy proclaim and cover your husband's plan for five months.. Your total out of pocket is less than 50.... U save 120 each month for first five months out of contract. If the note sold for 350-180=170/35=5 months.

The note was not available on Verizon. Verizon started to carry the note line at the note 2. The Note 2 is factory sim unlocked. I popped in a Tmobile sim and was able to get 4g. The Galaxy proclaim is no where near the same caliber phone as the note 2. Yes, you are saving money going prepaid but if you use Verizon towers, you won't get 4glte or 4GLTE phones (at least not without flashing). Once you factor in the subsidy, the Verizon $60 loyalty plan is pretty comparable with the StraightTalk $45 plan, and if you are a bargain Hunter, you can get contract phones at a great price.

I won't give up my Note though. Its the only phone I can ever remember not wanting to part with.

What I wish is that carriers offered a no - strings 30 day trial so people could test their services to see if they work for their needs.

but on Verizon, you need a CDMA phone so there is no way for them to do that without taking a loss on the phone.

It's not that they can't do it. It is that it would be cost prohibitive to do it.

You can try their service with any of their devices. Just that if you return then you have to pay a restocking fee. They allow you to try for 3 days and will refund you the activation fee. If you bring your own device and wanted to try their services, then you would just pay for the usage provided that you cancel within 3 days. Trust me, they are losing money when you return the phone as they can't sell it as new.

Of course anything can be done, but personally I think that Verizon's arrangement is fair. Even the supposed consumer friendly T-Mobile has a restocking fee of $50.

Don't buy that either, sorry. They could use used phones and u trade in used for new if u find the service works for u. Rent them cheap for the trial is another option.

Whether you believe it or not, the administrative costs of your idea alone make it cost prohibitive. So keep wishing, it ain't happening and it ain't happening because it doesn't make good business sense to do it.

And the used phones are not just lying around. They are used for the certified like new replacements so your idea if implemented would impact the pool of phones they have for CLNR. And if they don't have used phones to issue as CLNR, they issue new phones to people for warranty replacements. I know, I got one once when a phone had just come out and there had not been many returns of it.

So your idea is not gonna happen and there are valid business reasons why it won't.

Verizon Wireless has the strongest network for voice, data, and LTE, period. Additionally, the other carriers milk you in other ways. Basically, all of the carriers are pretty much the same. What it comes down to is what kind of service you want. I would recommend keeping Verizon for anyone that travels.
