18-minute ?First Hands-on? of the Galaxy Note 3 and Gear

Nothing new shown, But I still want it more than I did 18 minutes ago. lol, Well the Note 3 anyways.

The gear won't work for me, I'm a watch guy and i'm not giving up my ability to wear a nice watch to have a "second screen experience"

I love watches and haven't worn one in quite a few years now. I started thinking about getting another nice one earlier this year and then smartwatch reports started coming up. Well, I'd like a pedometer and other little neat things in my watch if I got one so my thoughts started drifting to a smartwatch. If Sprint does a bundle deal with the Gear then I may do it but I just can't spend $300 on it when I could buy a damn nice looking quartz or mechanical watch.

At first I was excited about the Gear, but then I thought to myself, what for, I mean really? The novelty of getting texts on your watch will wear off quickly. The phone has a built in pedometer of some type, so those two features aren't enough to justify buying the Gear in my book. It's another device that needs charging, it's another battery to worry about, and for what? I can grab the phone just as fast as it takes to look at the watch and fiddle with some tiny button. This is the same reason why I don't buy tablets, I am a one gadget guy, I want one device that does it all, and the Note 3 is that device more so than any other smartphone I have ever owned or even could have dreamed up myself.

I have it, but I'd like something that is lightweight for when I go on runs. I like to keep my carry-arounds minimal in those situations. =)

totally understand. it does beg the question of how independent it is from the phone. seen a list of the available apps for it yet?

With the GALAXY Gear, users gain a wide range of favorite features that further increase the benefits of this new accessory. New security enhancement Auto Lock automatically secures the companion smartphone screen any time that GALAXY Gear is more than 1.5 meters away from the smartphone, and then unlocks the smartphone when the companion devices are near each other again. Find My Device helps users find the location of their smart devices when they have been misplaced by making them beep, illuminate and vibrate. With Samsung GALAXY Gear, users can also control the music played on their Samsung GALAXY devices. As with traditional music players, it helps users browse, play and pause songs even when their smart device is not within reach. Finally, the GALAXY Gear also works like a Pedometer to track physical activity via enhanced, built-in sensor technology. This feature systematically and automatically monitors users so they can track key personal data such as calories burned, steps taken and distance covered.

They said that apps are being developed to help run alongside it. I'm hoping runkeeper or another dev puts an app out for the gear that can retain information until you're within phone distance so it syncs up. That's my hopes at least! This and if I'm at the gym, I'd like to keep it simple to change songs instead of pulling my phone out. If I can leave my phone in my bag, then even better. Gym shorts and 5.7" phone can deter productivity with a workout lol.
