2.4 vs 5ghz band preference

I have a Google WiFi router so it assigned the correct band (2.4 or 5) depending on the deivce connection and its signal strength. For most of my phones/tablets in the house it uses 5 GHz. 2.4 only kicks in for devices that can't handle 5 GHz (My thermostat/smoke detector/etc.) or if you walk far enough to make the 5GHz network weak it will swap you to 2.4 due to the range.

My Orbi mesh system doesn't have different name options for the different bands. So I can't specify that way. My Priv on MM did have a setting to select the preferred band. Odd that the S8's don't.

i have the same problem now with my orbi and s8+ it was worked fine for the 3 mounts and now it only works fine when im connected to the satellite
i dont know if its the phone or orbi

My situation is slightly different. I have no real connection problem, per se. I just can't specify the 5Ghz band as preferred. Having a device capable of the highest speed, 1Gbps service and being on the 2.5Ghz band most of the time is annoying.

I did find that when I had Smart Network Switch/Aggressive Switching enabled, my WiFi did seem a bit spotty. Exactly the opposite of what it's meant to achieve. I disabled the Aggressive Switching and things smoothed out.

If you have Aggressive Switching enabled, perhaps you should disable it and see if there's any difference?

(I assume you've probably restarted your modem and Orbi?)

Is there a way on these phones to select which band is preferred? I was playing around with a dual band radio and my phone would connect to 2.4 by default. If I disabled the 2.4 band, it would jump to 5ghz.

the SSID is broadcasting both bands.

Yes. You have to ensure that the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands have different SSIDs. Then connect to the 5GHz band, it should reconnect automatically afterwards.
