2 Qs: Volume Keys and Lock Screen

[I posted this in the "I've got a Nexus 6P here, lets get some questions going!" thread but figured I would start my own for quicker traction]

Hello, I'm new to the forum and the 6p

I upgraded from a Galaxy Note 2 that served me well for over three years.
I've found many answers and solved much of my setup needs but I seem to be stuck with two issues that I am hoping are simple and I am just overlooking somehow:

Is there a way to disable the volume keys while scrolling through the phone?
I seem to be on a home screen and accidentally hit the volume toggle switch and it changes my settings.
I'd rather not have that happen. I'd like the volume keys to do nothing unless I am on an actual call.

My second question is about notifications on the lock screen.
I have a couple of apps (like a stop watch) and when I hit the power button, it doesn't show me the stop watch timer and instead it says "contents hidden"

Is there a way to give different apps a "safe" permission so that it isn't hidden on the lock screen?
It's a timer. It really isn't sensitive data...

thanks in advance for any help!

There isnt a way to hide the volume key and no way to see it on the lockscreen. But it will make a spund when your stopwatch or timer is done

well, the stop watch is never done per se. it is counting up. being able to look at my lock screen and see what the number is without having to unlock my phone was real nice with the old Note 2.

Is this inherent with all new Droids, as in: this is how Marshmallow works?
Or is this a "feature" only found on the new Nexus?

And that volume key problem is huge. Wow. What's the point of setting phone to silent if I'm going to constantly accidentally turn the ringer up while holding the phone? hmmmmm....

For the lock screen thing go into settings>sound & notification>when device is locked and choose "show all notification content"

for lockscreen, go to settings > Sound & notification

scroll to 'When device is locked' tap it and set to show all notification content

My biggest gripe about this brilliant phone is the stupidly ridiculous placement of the volume and power buttons, its so frustrating picking the phone up then accidentally hitting power button, then it asks if I want to power off! Always adjusting sound too when I don't want to. It's the most stupid place to position the 3 buttons, worst on any phone I've ever owned anyway!

Yeah, the problem with adjusting the notification settings is that it also shows the contents of text messages received.
One would think that I could keep communication private and secure while also having access to non-sensitive apps.

I feel like this should be customizable somehow
Maybe there's a lock screen widget or something that I can use instead for this problem

Doesn't sound like there is any hope for the volume key troubles?
Maybe I should have stuck with the Samsung series... :(
I really was annoyed with TouchWiz and their bull**** too.
Was really hoping that the Nexus line would give me total control over my phone and other than these two issues, I'm really into the phone.

meh.

As far as I know, most phones have their volume keys on the side, with the exception of the LG line with them on the back. They might be in a slightly different position but read on...

How long have you guys had the phone so far? When you come from a different phone, it always takes a little time to get used to the size, the interface, the hardware. Your perception/muscle memory needs to change. It's like when you come from a phone with the power button on the top, you find yourself pressing the top of the phone for like a week.

At first, I found myself adjusting the volume every time I held the phone in my left hand to plug it in with my right. But, I've made a conscious effort to change the way I hold it and now, I naturally hold it so that I'm not pressing the volume buttons. I did have to think about it though for a few days to make myself change.

I do have a problem with finding the power button because of the case I've chosen to use. Very wisely, Huawei has put a different texture on the power button so you can quickly discern it from the volume keys. Unfortunately, my TPU case covers all three buttons eliminating this tactile difference and it's even hard to feel the space between them so I'm not sure I'm going to keep this case or switch to one where the buttons are exposed. I'm going to give it some more time and see if I can learn to identify the locations quickly without the feeling.

You probably have to think about this every time you pick up and use your phone for a little while. It would be too bad if you didn't give yourself a chance to adapt before returning this awesome phone and going back to what you had before.

I was just coming in here to post a different app that I found which resolves this problem too:

Volume Control: [note: I can't post a link to the app because I don't have 10 posts on the forum yet]

I don't mind the placement of the buttons, I just seem to remember not having this issue with my old Note 2. I think when I told that to be silent, it stayed silent even if I touched the volume buttons. I figured there was an answer to these couple of minor issues, was just a matter of hunting them down.

Now to resolve the timer on lock screen functionality (again, there might be a widget that the phone will know is not something to hide as a security risk. Just a matter of tracking it down...)

If you can't post a link, how about the name on the Android app store? I'm trying the one above, but am interested in others as well. I've tried 2 so far, with the one above being best so far.

PaulQ, wasn't necessary, but thanks nonetheless for the mention :).

The name is in the post: Volume Control
:-)

I know, it's generic and kind of easy to miss, but that was it!

and if you type in the generic play website, the rest of the URL is: store/apps/details?id=netroken.android.persistfree

If you go to Settings>Sounds & notifications, and Set when devices is locked to Show all, underneath that, you can go into App notifications and set specific apps to hide the sensitive content, ie texts, email, etc

Thank you!
I guess I was just thinking about it wrong.
I was choosing to Hide Sensitive Content from the general settings option instead of Show All and then inside the app itself, select for it to be hidden.

I knew I just had to learn the settings better! Thank you! Phone is now golden!

Just waiting for multi-window to be enabled and I'll have zero complaints. After 3+ years of multi-window, this is taking some adjusting to, but I was reading that it should be released soonish...

This forum has been extremely helpful :)

Agree! The buttons are way too sensitive! I returned the phone over it.

I too hated the overly sensitive power and volume keys. When my new case arrived, it solved the issue as they are no longer as sensitive. You really have to press them to invoke.

BTW, I came from a Note 2 also.
