2 white tabs on top of phone

What is the purpose of the two white semi transparent tabs on top and bottom of the phone? Are these notification lights? Or maybe something to do with the non removable covers?

The metal frame of the phone interferes with cell/wifi reception, and those 'strips' are made of plastic and allow signals to pass through more efficiently.
