So it's important to leave automatic updates on. Sometimes this means you'll get a new feature you didn't want, or lose one you relied on, but that's better than leaving your front door open to hackers.
I am not a security nut. I never once had someone take over my device without my permission. Years ago when I go my first 2 computers I did not even run a AV and did not get infected because I am careful.

That's the point. Somebody who harvests your data or joins your phone to their BotNet isn't going to send you a postcard telling you they did it. Unless it's one of those new encrypted, decrypt-for-ransom scams gaining popularity. Then you'll get a nice postcard asking for money in order to return your data. Seriously - not getting security updates is asking for trouble. By the time you discover you've been hacked it's too late. Everybody is fine until the moment they aren't. Then it's too late.
