Part of it is space, part of it is keeping costs down and I think we are all grateful that it's flash storage instead of spinning HDDs. I completely agree that we need to start seeing larger options, but OEM's seem to be telling us that even when they put out the larger versions, most consumers still buy whatever the cheapest version is. A little over a year ago an article was released saying that we'd overcome the 64GB limitation on a single chip and iPads already had 128GB versions on those, so we know it's possible.. but are people going to pay a $100-300 premium for that, especially when we've been becoming more acclimated to an "all your data everywhere" cloud style for a few years now? Costs will go down when demand goes up and demand will go up as costs go down. We need a catalyst and it's competing against the essentially free cloud for price consideration - that's a rough place to start from.

This. Most users won't pay for it a manufacturers don't see a reason to up it... Also it is a space thing as well (for now).

I would say those are the two main reasons. Also waz for now why not nab a big SD card so you can out stuff on it? It's the best work around for now.

No im in uk so its pounds please dont reply if your going to insult

I really don't think any insult was intended.

Regardless of weather it is the Dollar, British pound, Rubles, Peso's, Franks, Yen, or Dinar, it is all about profit for the product being sold. Until we as users decide we won't buy a phone with lower storage then this will continue to happen.

The problem is how many users do you think really just use their fancy powerful mobile computer for just posting on Facebook, playing Candy Crush, taking a few pictures, along with being a phone. I would suspect a large portion of people. Very few people understand how much they can do, and probably fewer that really do care enough to really try to push it. So those few of us that do get stuck with trying to work around what the mass wants. The best solution for now is the SD Card.

I think allot of people like the idea of a smart phone and really don't actually use it as a smart phone.

It is about demand. When enough people won't buy a phone because it doesn't have enough internal memory then manufacturers would accommodate. Honestly the number of people who need 64gb internal in addition to 128gb sd card is very very small.

But if you need it, you can get an android with 128gb internal memory.

I agree with your statement. Why I think so many people use Iphones, because it is great for social media, emails, texting etc

The Note 3 is also good for all those things but I can use it for so much more. Scheduling, Bill pay, spreadsheet, etc. I use to carry my iPhone and iPad everywhere. Now I only use my Note 3 For everything.

So it is understandable you want more storage. It isn't going to happen as long as the phone is made for the masses though. Your best option is to use a SD CARD. Once you move Movies, Pictures, and Music to the SD Card I suspect you would be amazed how much space is free on the 32GB of internal storage. The biggest users of space are multimedia based content. I have over 46GB of content sync'd with plex. I couldn't do that with the internal storage. But I accept that. That is my sole reason for getting the 128GB card. It was so I can take my content. Sync it to my phone with plex and go to a friends house with a Chromecast and view my content there.

Another possible solution would be a Wi-Fi Network Attached Drive. I have a Seagate Satellite Wi-Fi drive with 500GB of storage as well. Now those come in sizes up to 1TB and that would work very well.

Do you use a smart dock to use it the phone like a laptop?

I think I saw samsung comment on this o0 they do have the 64gb in some states only if previous years they made profit from the 64gb and where they don't have it its because most buy 16gb and add 32gb msd and some buy 32gb I know alot of people that do that lol
Also to cut cost saves huge $$$

If you can guarantee minimum sales of 128gb model then they would be happy to make it.

If we were to buy a 2.3ghz quad core cpu 3GB ram on a laptop im sure we would get a 500GB hard drive on it. So my question to mobile phone manufacturers why do you give us only 16 or 32GB storage I dont understand the rest of the spec is great but the memory is terrible. ...

Ulimate Note 3

Oh hey, you were the guy trolling about data plans on the M8 subforum. Hello!

To answer your question, a couple things come up here:
1) God's honest truth they'll still shave a nickel on a $1000 phone.
2) A flagship phone uses more expensive and durable flash.
3) When these forces meet you find the absurdly low storage cap.

But it gets more complex. See there is SLC, MLC, TLC flash. Many phones and nearly all SD cards now use TLC flash which is the cheapest, slowest and least durable at this point. SLC is more than a hundred times sturdier, but takes a pile more space and costs a lot more too. So top phones and SD cards still mostly compromise with MLC memory. They should still be able to do at least 64GB but the feature is not being pushed. 4K/UHD video alone makes this a good idea to have. Sadly, Samsung may end up being the first to 128 internal because they own ALL the technology required. They can ship an SSD for your laptop with capacity of 1TB and mass under 20g, they claim. So howzabout a cut down controller, 128GB and budget of 3g and .25W? I think they could do it....

1) When you say 'memory' you mean storage.

2) When there's not enough storage on your mobile device you will have to use cloud storage. Meaning that your stuff does not reside in your storage space, but in their storage space, where the NSA can easily access it.

3) Google/Android took that even a step further with KitKat: the user cannot write user-selectable files to external Micro SD storage anymore, forcing the user to use cloud storage which is outside of his/her control!

I.o.w. it's a big brother scheme.

Want to save your stuff outside of the reach of the NSA? Get a free MEGA cloud account: 50 GB of end-to-end encrypted storage space outside US jurisdiction. Works with every web browser on every web connected device. And there's an excellent free MEGA app for your mobile device(s) in the Play Store too.

Mega is probably the biggest offender of privacy rights - you don't get anything for free. There's a price to pay for every "free" thing in life, like Google for example. They harvest data in ways you haven't even thought of -

They are located in New Zealand and are not regulated - so what would make anyone think their data isn't being harvested? Where does Mega make its money exactly? They are a file sharing site - and a lot of what's posted up their breaks copyright, but they're still in business.

You think your device is private? Not a chance...and if you believe it is, you need to read more on how they invade your privacy every minute of the day with Android. It works as well as it does because it has no regard for privacy! NSA would be the least of my concern...

Ever think why it is that you are able to view the same searches on your desktop PC and your devices?? Android is beyond the most public data sharing you can imagine...in line with the Google philosophy.

Google + is a perfect example of privacy invasion...

This is supposed to be a serious thread about internal storage, please. *ahem* Have you ever considered the profit angle of your paranoia? I would never use Drive because I still think Google snoops office docs, but a phone having low storage is a good way to get people started on Box or Dropbox etc. Just think about those of us with 50GB Galaxy perk. When the email comes reminding us we'll be going back to 2GB on Dropbox, OR we could subscribe to keep our files and get even MORE storage for them...? A good number of people will bite on that hook and start shelling out.

You know the sad truth is that MOST users are buying entry level devices, not a 32GB or 64GB model. I would be the majority of Android devices are the 16GB model (the one that is FREE on contract in the US or $350-500 on the open market) or the 4-8GB models in emerging markets. As carriers continue to offer discounts for people that BYOD to them, the lower end models will only eat up more market share. Expandable storage is about half the cost of internal storage - which is why most manufacturers have gone this route.

If you are talking cloud storage, simply install Flickr to the device and select auto upload over Wi-Fi and keep your photos cleared. This will give you 1TB of storage for free for photos and videos. Google Docs will back up 15GB of docs for free... Google Music will store 20,000 songs for free as well. This should take care of any major storage issues going forward for most people. Now with proper memory card installed, you can download the content to the card and keep that precious phone memory free for other stuff.

My thoughts are running cheaper devices out is the better way to keep technology moving forward. Even the $50 phones from Blu and Phceda are pretty amazing when you look at the price tags. No, they aren't a Galaxy S 5 or an HTC One, but they are pretty impressive for the normal user. There will always be a $750 power phone that pushes the limits of possible, but those $50-100 devices are the ones that will sell in the future.

I am not sure what you mean by half the cost. 64gb internal memory is $29. A quality sd card would probably run you more.

Yes, because you are comparing the wholesale cost of memory to a retail SD card... You have to compare the 'retail' costs together or the 'wholesale' costs together. You can't compare retail to wholesale. It doesn't work. Whole sale, I can snag 64GB MicroSD cards for $12-15 each. That best's the $29 by almost half. Where it gets fuzzy is that a 16GB card is only $10-12 wholesale. That means you can get 4x the storage for the same or just a buck or two more.

Take a look at dpham00 's cost breakdown for the iPhone 5s. He showed it on another thread about the treatment of workers at the massive Chinese Foxconn factory that supplies Apple.
Anyway, in the Nand flash line, 16gb costs the factory $9, 32gb $19 and the 64gb only $29. I didn't know wholesale sd cards were that cheap, but it's a fair comparison then.
Someone explained there are 3 types of flash drive, and better phones use the mid priced one.

It's strange that more people don't question why a $9.40 and $10.20 MAXIMUM increase in expense results in a $100 increase at BOTH stages to the retail price. Keep in mind these are generic off the shelf prices, Apple likely gets them cheaper. End of the day, if you get the 64GB you're paying the MAXIMUM OF $19.60 in their increased expense plus AT LEAST $180.40 in nothing but profit. That's around 9:1 profit to value for that trade-off. In - Sane. Given what we know about these costs and the margins on iPhones, Apple could still be profitable by pricing them thus: 16GB $550, 32GB $550, 64GB 550... But if they wanted to recoup costs and we wanted to give them a fair value it could be 16GB $550, 32GB $555 and 64GB 560. With that pricing structure in mind, if you wanted to pay $200 extra for the phone, it should come with at least 512GB (assuming 8x64GB @ $25each = 512GB for $200).

The question I have for the OP is what item on your device do you have that makes you feel that you need more space on it? I have about 30 GB worth of video and images on my device that would pose an issue if not for the 128GB SD card. And even then, it's mostly because I have a couple of long 4K videos that I shot (that I can't watch since I don't have a 4K monitor) and a few full feature movies on my device (And the entire Breaking Bad series on my device as well). I imagine having 500 GB on my device would be severe overkill and would price the phone higher than it should. I personally would rather have the resources applied to a top shelf processor, or more memory. I can't imagine a cell phone company wanting to stuff 500 GB worth of storage and being able to convince consumers of the added benefit of so much space. Then again, we are consumers and we've fallen for worse.

Why is it so unusual that more people don't question the Apple pricing model? Do you think it's any different with say, a Note 3 at $750.00 with only 32 GB of RAM? Do you believe that SamDung makes any less margin on phones than Apple? Samsung sells more everything than Apple does and pays even less for parts than Apple does..but their flagship phones are priced in the same territory as Apple, or even higher on some models.
