3.1 and Host USB Questions...

I have a few questions about 3.1 and Host USB/Mass Storage etc...

1, What file system formats are supported? Will it see and HFS+, FAT32 or NTFS volume? Or say an SD card from a Sony EX1/EX3 HD cam thru a reader??? Or are we limited to memory sticks?

2, Now that Host USB is enabled in 3.1, where are these external sources mounting?

3, I have yet to root my device Xoom, but its on todays agenda...Is the Tiamat kernel now necessary? or was that just to enable the SD slot?

A google search is yeilding no information about questions 1 and 2...other than from the tiamat kernel/prior to 3.1 info....which I'm not sure pertains to this line of questions...or does it?

Thanks for the help!

Fat32

Must be mounted to micro USB with an otg cable.

No kernel is available, its made available by BRDs rom that must be loaded to root.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979 follow this thread.

You have a bit to go before there though. You have to unlock first. Then just adb push the recovery and then flash the tiamat kernel, then follow that thread. Have fun!

You also have to have a microsd card installed, or an otg cable hooked up with a fat32 thumb/card

Great thanks for the info!

Just to be clear though...My Xoom is now sporting 3.1. So I still have to add the Tiamat kernel to use host usb? I thought that was part of 3.1?

Nope. 3.1's one weakness is its lack of SD and USB hosting. It will allow keyboards, mice, cameras, and controllers. No external drives are read. You must root with BRD's instructions to gain USB hosting for external storage.

Are you unlocked? Do you have the android sdk installed and familiar with adb? 3g or wifi?

Gotcha ok...thats ******ed! but ok lol

I am unlocked and rooted...just getting some essential apps back in place before I move on to either the gym or this...fun saturday night!

Thanks for you help! I'll probably do the steps for the Tiamat 1.4.X now since that will give me what I am ultimately looking for...I'll keep you posted.

*** note ***

After installing Root Explorer, I now have /mnt/sdcard/external and /mnt/usbOTG...SWEET! lol

@mrlauder- Just curious... were you able to get this to work? I just got my OTG cable and am trying to figure out if I can hook my DroidX to the Xoom w/ this cable to copy stuff over. But so far no luck.... doesn't see it. I want to try it w/ a thumb drive next...

@LMO,

Yea, I've been rooted and using one of BRD's TIAMAT Kernels for a few weeks now...I've been able to attatch and read FAT32, and NTFS drives...I've had some conversation with BRD about implimenting HFS+ Journaling so I can read MAC drives...

Once your rooted and you have the CW Mod boot img everything is as simple as pie...I've changed kernels 2/3 times without even thinking about it...Its the way a moto device should be! Lol

Are you using one of the custom kernels or are you stock? I wasnt able to see my X either when plugged in, but it light up the charge indicator....

I think you'll have better luck with your thumb drive...

Good luck!

Yes I am also on Tiamat (version 1.4.2, 1.4GHz). Not sure why it won't see the DX. I will be trying a thumb drive shortly. Keeping my fingers crossed...

I think its more to do with a driver issue...The Xoom doesnt know how to to tell the X that it wants to read it as Mass Storage even tho the X is set to Mass Storage...

Not sure anyone has that going.

BRD just dropped 1.4.3 wich has the HFS support I was looking for. Now I gotta figure out how to mount it lol...Journaling FS are a pain in the rear!

You can only charge your phone. If you want to read its SD card you have to take it out and use a reader. Easiest way I have found to transfer small files is BT share from phone to Xoom.
