3 MILLION Nexus 4 have been sold

3 million! I'll bet they were hoping for 1 million. That number is HUGE for a phone NOT SOLD by AT&T or Verizon. Seriously, that's a great number.

3 million! I'll bet they were hoping for 1 million. That number is HUGE ..
According to Wikipedia, Samsung sold 50 million S3's in 12 months then 4 million S4 in only it's first 4 weeks. So the S4 is selling at 1.7 times the rate of the S3. That extrapolates to 85 million phones for 12 months.

So that 3 million N4 number is meagre. It could have been a lot more if Google/LG had not completely stuffed supply in the first 3 months.

3 million?!

Amazing! That's like well over HALF what the iPhone 5 sold in it's first week!

No wonder I've hardly ever seen anyone else with one ;)

How on earth did the best smartphone bargain EVER sell so poorly? I mean, the N4 is pretty much on a par with the S3 but around half the price enyet the S3 sold, what, 50 million units and the N4 has sold 3?! People clearly have WAY more money than sense :D

Most people pretty much bought S3 when it launched last year.

there are many reasons why the s3 sold more.
1. It was released first
2. Samsung pushed a huge marketing campaign for the S3. Lg/Google didnt for the N4.
3. Google/LG fudged up the release of the N4 for the first 3 months.
4. When the S3 launched it was available on a bunch of networks, while it took the n4 for some time
5. The only people who knew about the N4 were people who read Android forums, many who already owned the s3
6. People like me felt the s3 was superior to the N4. For example the s3 has better battery life, a removable(and upgradeable) battery, better camera, expandeable storage (for many people, 16gb just isnt enough) and is less prone to break because its not made out of glass. Personally, I find touchwhiz not as smooth as vanilla android but much more user friendly. I like the color reproduction the S3's screen more than on the N4.

Dont get me wrong, if you only had 300 the n4 is the best phone you can buy at that price. However, If you're willing to spend some more you could get an even better phone and why some people may have chose the s3 over the n4.

Meager? Really? Let's compare the marketing budget for any Samsung product v. the Nexus. $500 million v. ZERO? Samsung is sold at EVERY online retailer plus every brick and mortar retailer - Nexus is sold on a single page, on a single website (later T-Mobile as well). Apples and Oranges man...get a clue.

Haha, you guys both went to the same business school, eh? Did you really just compare the iPhone 5 to the Nexus 4? You realize that it took YEARS for all android based phones - combined - to sell more units than iPhones? Right? I won't repeat the difference in marketing and sales channels between the iPhone and Nexus, other than to point out that the iPhone 5 was on every major carrier in the entire world and the iPhone 5 was the featured product in the most successful brick and mortar store on the planet. But you're right, Nexus 4 is a GIANT failure.

dude he likes the S3. There's nothing you can say to punish him more than he already does to himself.

3 million is impressive. The original EVO was more than 6 million, and it enjoyed a major ad campaign.

The S3 is a great phone. I loved mine. Also love the Nexus 4. But I think the way Google underestimated demand of the Nexus 4 was the reason it never got mindshare. They couldn't keep up with demand from day one... Imagine what demand could have grown to if they actually had a marketing budget.

Will be interesting to see how Google markets the Nexus 5. The 3 million sales could be dwarfed in this next round if Google actually markets and has their distribution issues resolved.

Get a clue?! I said that the 3 million number is meagre compared to the 50 million S3 or 85 million (projected) S4. That is a simple statement of arithmetic comparison. You then go on to waffle about marketing budgets whatever, but that is irrelevant to my statement comparing 2 numbers. There are heaps of reasons we could identify why Google/LG only sold a few N4 but the result is that they only sold a meagre quantity. You're the one that needs to get a clue.

"numbers sold" is a simplistic and foolhardy argument for quality. Remember that next time you drive by the golden arches, the disgusting seagull magnet they try to pass off as food and see that sign saying "over X billion served".
Your society made that junk food the richest restaurant chain in the world and has giant herds of elephants in stretchy pants grazing at Walmart every day. You'll forgive me for having little respect for any reference to sales as a measuring stick for quality.

I'll take my well made Nexus 4 and prompt updates (read "timely support") over a mediocre S3 and the upcoming Nexus 5 over the equally mediocre S4 any day of the year. OEM phones and their 6 months behind the curve software is ok for soccer moms and their bowling league husbands. On that note, just to stave off any counter argument, Android version updates are close to if not the top most talked about topics on the AC forums. So obviously it matters to smartphone enthusiasts a LOT. Funny how the same people who are so quick to claim that high iPhone sales are because of sheep, are willfully blind to their own hypocrisy when it comes to Samsung. There's got to me a lot of broken windows in that glass house by now.

I wonder why AT&T doesn't sell the Nexus 4 directly, especially since the phone is compatible with their network. Apparently AT&T would rather try to sell the HTC First. That only sold around 15,000 units.

I am guessing that AT&T doesn't like to promote unlocked phones, so that's why the Nexus 4 was left out of their lineup.

Bingo. Carriers want you buying their own selection. My local store are not only unwilling to answer even simple APN questions about porting my phone to their service, the reps are downright rude about it.

Now, 15,000 - that's a number all you Samsung fan boys can make fun of. What a huge failure.

Damn not sold by ATT or Verizon? 3 million seems like a bigger number now lol. I'm in Canada so I didn't know this. But here too, a major carrier Rogers doesn't offer it either. Not sure who else doesn't. Google needs to get more carriers on board it seems, unless they're purposefully doing this to let OEM's thrive and grow.

I agree this N4 I'm holding is incredible for the price. Vanilla android just runs so smoothly. So much smoother than the S4's I keep trying out in store.

I'm not sure what Google's strategy is with the Nexus devices, other than to showcase Android and push reference hardware. Yeah, so the only US carrier with the 4 is T-Mo, and total cost was like $500 or 550 when the phone came out - so no reason to buy there instead of the Play Store. Between the Nexus 4, the GE One and S4, and new Moto phones, it doesn't seem like a cohesive strategy - other than to just get as many people using Android as possible.
