3 weeks with Android, but I miss iOS so much...(Update: I think though I will stay with Android)

Re: 3 weeks with Android, but I miss iOS so much...

That's surprising, a lot of people give high praises to Apple's customer service. How was your experience different?

My iPhone, Ipad and Ipod touch had gotten completely crippled by IOS7.
I could no longer get or send out emails, my calendars were un synced, all my notes were lost and a whole bunch of apps stopped working.
I did the whole factory reset thing several times, nothing worked.
My devices were also slowed to a crawl, pages loaded partially if at all.
After several unsuccessful trips to the genius bar, they finally told me that it was my fault, I was using the devices wrong.
So I went to best buy to get my Note 3 and got fabulous customer service from Samsung to set it up.
A couple of months later I got my Note Pro and again, Samsung helped me with any problem I had.
There's no going back for me.
I still have hiccups mostly due to my being a complete techtard, but I'm learning.
And I love my note devices.
I could do without google intrusive style but I'll put up with it.

Re: 3 weeks with Android, but I miss iOS so much...

I don't care if I can export a file from photostream on ios. I just need to have my pictures available everywhere and photostream does that. How does Google + photo sync achieves that? It's half baked. Google is ignoring that people do use computers..People don't use Chrome as their main OS...

Posted via Android Central App

I'm confused... You can see your photos on Google + without Chrome OS...

I auto backup to Google all day.. And just simply log into Google +... Go to photos.. Then auto backup. So.. What are you saying you need Chrome OS for? :what:

KitKat had quick replies already baked in? Just pull down the notification tray?

It's more pulling down the notification shade and clicking the text which will bring you to the Text app. Reply, then you can hit the recent app key (lower right, next to home) and go back to the app you left.

That doesn't sound too shabby.

I get what he's saying. When photo stream works, it works like a backup solution. Ie when he turns his PC on, iCloud copies his photos to his PC. (This is actually the problem I'm currently having. Photo stream is available on all my devices, but it's not copying to my PC.)

Apple's customer service is second to none, as verified by surveys and polls year after year. As far as the aforementioned experience, there is probably more to that story, as that doesn't sound even remotely close to what Apple's reply would be. I'm not saying that it didn't happen, just that there is more to the story.

Re: Coming from iOS to the M8; help make the switch a positive one?

Some background info:
I had an M7. At first, I loved the phone. Eventually though, I grew to dislike it. Between the bad hbattery life, a perceived lack of polish, and the camera, I longed to go back to the iPhone. I camped out in front of my apple store for the 5S launch and even went to work that day. Now the M8 is out and I can't resist it's siren song. Everything on my 5S "just works" (although iCloud isn't copying my photos to my PC), but I miss Blinkfeed. I miss the gallery plugging directly into Flickr. I miss auto syncing my photos and videos with Dropbox. I miss not having to cup the bottom of my phone to direct sound towards me.

I miss a lot of things that only Android does. I want to get the M8.

So here's what I'm asking for help with. I want to be able to hit 2 days on a charge with moderate usage. I want a "just works" kind of experience with the M8; is it possible on Android?

1. I have multiple email accounts that receive a lot of email. I can cut these down, but I still feel that I receive more email than the average person. I need an email client that works well, has a unified inbox, and supports fetch. I'm of the opinion that push sucks up battery life. Is this true?

2. Tweetbot is the best twitter client out there; is there anything comparable on android?

3. Is there any way to access my iTunes movies on android?

4. I've seen good things about the Cal app. I don't like the stock HTC one and I'm not overjoyed with the Google calendar either. Thoughts?

5. My iPhone is jailbroken almost solely for biteSMS. Is there an SMS app that allows for quick replies without leaving your current app?

6. Scrolling backgrounds. One of the other reasons I jailbroke was for a scrolling wallpaper. Is there any way to get this while still using Sense?

Thanks in advance!

1. I am using Nine for email right now, its not bad, but not as good as the stock iOS email client IMO.
2. Tweetbot is amazing, I tried a ton of twitter clients for Android and have settled on Talon. Its pretty solid.
3. Yes
4. I have been using DigiCal and I really like it. On iOS I use Fantastical.
5. ChompSMS and Textra are made by the same people who make BiteSMS.
6. Yes should be stock.

Yeah. I'm wondering that myself since over never even gotten a scintilla of an effort to help from Samsung customer service but the few times I needed Apple they always were above and beyond.

Re: 3 weeks with Android, but I miss iOS so much...

Everytime I have a problem, I get on Samsung support, on Facebook and I've always gotten get help from them.

I hope all you iPhone fans are still around, because I have a serious problem.

And, this is a really long question, but I think the answer will be short.

I'm an Android fan. Have been since the early years. But I have to switch to an iPhone 5s because my hearing aids are controlled only by iOS 7.1.1

I bought the iPhone a week ago because I have to install the hearing aid software before I pick up the hearing aids.

But...

I'm not ready to put my Galaxy S4 out to pasture yet. Which means I want to keep my micro SIM card in my Galaxy.

However...

It turns out that you can't even begin to play with the iPhone 5s unless you insert a nano SIM card into the iPhone.

Unfortunately, I need to use my iPhone to install some hearing-aid apps, at the very least. That means I have to cut my SIM card down to nano size and then return it to my Galaxy inside a nano-to-micro adapter.

Do I have to do this myself and take my chances cutting it.? If I screw up the chopping job, then I'll have to go to my carrier for another Sim card. And they'll give me either a new micro card for my galaxy OR a nano for my IPhone.

If I get a nano, I can still use it on the galaxy with an adapter. But I don't want my carrier to know I'm going to use two phones. I'm grandfathered into a fabulous no-contract plan I don't want to lose.

Also, every SIM card has its own number. What will happen to my setup on my Galaxy if they change the SIM number?

Thank, thanks, thanks.

If you are not prepared to root your device, then Android OS gets also boring, as iOS...Maybe because both OS work pretty well...
You will always be able to do more with Android than iOS. So no matter how boring Android is, iOS will be worse.

Notifications: The lock screen notifications of iOS are much better than any plugin or widget can accomplish on Android. Android does't natively support lock screen notifications, but there are widgets and apps that imitate iOS behavior...
..which makes them native.

Android allows 3rd party app integration. That means any app can be treated as if it is native.

Video playback support is not as good as on the iOS...I know there are many video players, but iOS offers much better compatibility with mp4 files. MKV files on the other hand play very well on Android too (you need an app on iOS for that..)
That has not been my experience. Apple does seem to prefer certain formats (usually apple-specific formats) in my experience. I remember having issues getting some AVIs to play on my nephew's iTouch. I ended up having to convert it to MP4.

Apps like VLC support virtually anything, and can be integrated as your default player on Android. Cannot do that on iOS.

The fact that Dropbox runs in the background on Android and saves taken pictures automatically is great, but on iOS we have Photostream that does the exact same thing, and is much better integrated in the OS..
So what? Google has it's own version of photostream as well. And with the share menu, I can upload photos to any service I want, not just the ones supported by the OS. I can immediately upload stuff to dropbox or Box or any other service from whatever app I am in at the moment, and I do not have to wait for Google to support it.

The OS is not as polished as iOS and looks worse too! I don't believe I am saying that, but iOS 7 is beautiful...
Meh...that is subjective. I personally just hate the icon grid, especially since you can't place the icons how you want. I found the iPhone to be a chore to navigate. I prefer the clean flat look of vanilla android.

Re: 3 weeks with Android, but I miss iOS so much...

I have an iPhone4 and it works like a charm on iOS7 and other people say lag. Dont even try iOS7 on lesser models.
By contrast, KitKat works awesomely on my old hardware. My ancient HTC Rezound has never looked better. Better functionality, faster and smoother UI. My "obsolete" Nexus 4 is now every bit as fast as my Nexus 5. Which itself is every bit as fast as the newest iPhone. No lag anywhere.

Apple's photo stream is better because it integrates with Mac desktop apps too. With Google you always need to do an extra step because Android doesn't offer that level of integration with Mac.

Nine is much better than the stock iOS mail.app. There is no comparison. It looks great, offers tons of features and works very well too. The stock mail.app of iOS is ok, but nothing special. What is that, that you like more in the stock iOS app?

Tweetbot is amazing, I agree, but Talon is pretty good too. I would love to have Tweetbot on Android though...

Digical is very good, but still not as good as Week Calendar on iOS.

I just like the look of the iOS email app. Simple and to the point. However having used Nine for over a month now I am in love with it and don't think I could go back to the stock app. Nine = amazing.

Oh man I forgot about Week Cal on iOS. I used that forever but ditched it for Fantastical and Fantastical 2. I miss Fantastical big time.....

Re: Coming from iOS to the M8; help make the switch a positive one?

DigiCal is the only calendar app I found on Android that is nearly as good as iOS calendar apps.

So what happened OP?
I read through the first few pages of this thread last week. You were considering changing your mind. You let the thread run for a while. I now read the last 2 pages and you're back.

Very well reasoned posts from both sides. I just want to find the murderer, I mean the outcome.

Are you waiting until the end of the month?

I have never ever thought that I would use an Android device. I was a big fan boy, absolutely adore(d) Apple, but I also always liked HTC a lot as a company and really love their designs. I have used HTC devices with Windows Mobile (the HD2 for example), and I always liked them. Last year, the HTC One M7 was tempting, but not tempting enough. This year, the M8 is such an amazing device that I couldn't resist.
I am learning to like Android and I can see its advantages and disadvantages.
At the end of the day, the M8 is so amazing, I need to have it!
So, to answer the question, yes, I stayed with Android and got rid of my iPhone (but it was really a very difficult decision).

The question now I am facing is, should I keep the silver M8 or get the gunmetal gray? My M8 has three scratches and I will definitely send it back, so I ordered a gunmetal gray as a replacement, but that doesn't mean anything. I can still get a silver M8 as a replacement.
I am so in love with the M8, I don't think that the upcoming iPhone 6 will change anything for me!

So, what do you think? I know, colors are a very subjective thing, but I also understand that the flagship color for the M8 is the gunmetal gray. On the other hand I love how sleek the silver one looks. Anyway, tomorrow morning I will have a gunmetal too, so I can make direct comparisons...

That's great. Glad you are happy with the M8, and decided the Android pros vastly outweigh the cons.
I have only experience of Samsung's. I bought a sealed white Note 3 by mistake on eBay UK, but prefer it to a black one now!

Physically the M8 is the most attractive phone, it was great in a store, and I would like to try the HTC Sense UI long term. I like the Note 3 screen size too though.
I never had an Apple but have used them and can see their appeal (appleal?). I still pop in to an Apple store, but after my Note 3 I could never adjust.

Android, and Sammy's TouchWiz, does irk the hell out of me on occasion. It is harder work to keep on top, but there is more reward I think. Android is becoming more solid with each update, if the transition is painless, but because of it's open nature it will always be a work in progress. What next with Tizen?

Apple seems seamless(?) and solid if you're immersed in the all the hardware, but requires you to be a believer and to never look out the window!
A bit boring too though and only useable when needed. I spend at least 5 times more on my Note 3 screen than my much smaller S2, because I want to.

Silver or Grey? Grey, though I would have initially thought that would show scuffs more easily - you had a different experience. Either one. It's one phone I would like to keep naked, but the finish would need to be robust.

I hope you can get it to fulfil all your requirements, you and the other posters know a lot about the apps available. :D
