30 June Update Doubtful

meh. If I wasn't going to root it and had no intentions of making the phone what I wanted, I would've just gotten an iphone regardless of how much I dislike apple. The development community is the biggest plus for Android and can't be matched by anyone else.

I hate when people say that. You don't need to be a part of the developer community to use anything other than an ios device. I personally hate Apple products and their style of operation. Android has a lot of potential, and if Google can correct the extreme delay in official updates, they will be the best.

You can fix the reboot issue yourself if you really want to. Just install the leaked MR2 update. Requires no rooting and takes about 10 minutes. Also comes with MyVerizon.

Yes but doesn't it also wipe your phone in the process? If I have to wipe my phone again I might as well get a new one.

I don't even care if I get cookiepuss v. 0.0.034.! I just want the REBOOTS TO STOP!. I had 6 last night within 3 hours. Uncalled for! It's a phone not an alien spaceship for crying out loud! FIGURE IT OUT!

As Mortiel said install the leaked MR1. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain. It may or may not completely fix the reboot problem but it WILL at the very least improve things. It was almost as bad as you when I broke down and installed it a couple days after it leaked. I went from 4-12 a Day (that I knew of) to one a day and now I get one every few days. Others have reported it completely fixed the issue for them. It also fixed other things and make the phone usable again. I don't usually install leaked software myself (unless I know for a fact that it is the official update just a little early), but this is easy and WILL make things better for you. It's a signed official build from HTC and will NOT void your warranty.

No rooting involved? I must have missed that post. Do you have a link with the steps to install without rooting?

The whole RUU does not require root. Just rename the fle as instructed, save it to your SD card, boot into recovery, and fillow the prompts. This is no different form installing an OTA patch by manually downloading it before it is pushed it to you.

Installing the so called MR2.5 radio DOES require root.

You won't get new you get Certified Like New (a fancy name for refurbished) and there is a good chance you will have the same issues. It seems to be a crap shoot as to weather you will get pushed the bum MR1 update or not (most aren't anymore). I know it's a pain but a factory data reset is nothing to be afraid of if you back up your apps and other data to the SD card.

Its not Google's fault for update delays. All Google does is make the code available, and typically launches it with some kind of flagship (i.e. Nexus). The manufacturer takes it and puts in their own seasonings, which also includes carrier-branded add-ons (which is mostly bloatware apps and a boot up splash screen), and then the manufacturer takes it to the carrier for testing and distribution.

Delays are 70% manufacturer and 30% carrier in most cases. Since Verizon is a nazi when it comes to testing updates, its more like 60% manufacturer / 40% carrier when it comes to Verizon devices.

The reason I mentioned Google is that they should really put their foot down when it comes to manufacturer skins. The fact that updates are delayed by six months is very serious. If skins were created as additional downloads or Google were to include instantaneous skinning coding for manufacturers, updates would not be delayed by carrier or manufacturer. It's time for Google to take ownership of it's product.

Another remedy would be for Google not to release it for 6 months giving the manufacturers time to implement the changes before everyone released at the same time, including Google. How's that sound? :)

Well, maybe only 29% Nazi with MR1 ...

Thanks, Robrecht

I really don't understand why people who are having serious reboot problems don't just install the leaked MR2 update. It worked for most of us and is not difficult to install. Why keep waiting for this update if your phone is that bad???

I could not have said it better. I rooted and installed the MR2 leak the day I got my phone. No problems at all. My buddy got his thunderbolt and used the phone for a week before I rooted it and he hated his phone during that week. He was getting 1x in his house and having reboots. After the root and MR2 update on his phone he got 3g in his house and no longer any reboots. The MR2 is worth a look.

They have limited (really no) authority to do that under the open source license that they released android under. Oems can do whateverthey want with it. Thatsthe nature of open source. All they can do is leverage the aspects that are not open source (the market a day their proprietary apps) which they are now starting to do.

I personallyget tired of everybody blaming skins/uis forupdate delays. Sure they factor in. But do you all remember the first three phones to get froyo last summer after the nexus one?

EVO 4G
MOTOROLA DROID
HTC DROID INCREDIBLE

2 of these phones have ever Sense the most elaborate of all the skins. If the update is a priority then they work together to get it done in a timely manner. Skin or no skin.

If you want gingerbread, the sense UI on steroids, and a stable release for the thunderbolt that fixes the gps, reboot issue, etc. Flash the das bamf remix 2.1 and install the mr2 update. I have it on my thunderbolt and besides having all the goodies with gingerbread its even more customizable than the standard sense ui. Trust me you will not be disappointed.... Just find it on the xda developers website...

Thank god it's only going to take 2 months off a phone with a 24 month contract life to fix such crippling problems. Hats off, VZW and HTC, you are truly at the forefront of customer service.

I returned my rebooting/randomly shutting off Thunderbolt and got an iPhone thinking that everything just worked... Nope, very little jailbreak stuff works with iphone 4 or rather the verizon one due to them running a significantly different kernel (despite what Jobs says, theres fragmentation in apple now). The ATT model get 4.3.4, while vzw customers have 4.2.8 as the current model. Bootlace doesn't work, so loading android to satisfy my needs is out of the question. What annoys me the most is the lack of quality of the apps. Mail sux, no options in the mail app to attatch a document (literally, the reason I went iPhone was because my work required it to use exchange). Hanging with friends which is only on iOS keeps crashing badly.
Seen here
Plants Vs Zombies looks and plays much better on android than it does on iOS. Got one level where it was all choppy cause I had too many peas going. CRAP. I went to vzw today to ask them how much they would give me for it, but I didn't know they don't do that instore. While I was there, I asked about the update and the guy told me it had been fixed (MANAGER FLAT OUT LIED). I hadn't been browsing on here lately since I wanted to give iOS a fair shot, but its crap. Can't wait for this to be official so I can go back comfortably.

The only major gripe I have with this phone is battery life. Does the MR2 help in this regard?

I keep getting service unavailable when I check. Wonder if verizon is getting it ready to push out.

I'm getting the same "No new software update Available" message as always. I'm running the leaked MR2, but if the service is down, it would be down for everyone, or at least regionally I'd think.

I use the extended battery so I don't really have any battery problems. Overall battery life seems about the same for me. I did spend 3-4 days in a weak signal location and my battery usage there was really high but the benefit of that was that I still had signal. In the past I would just be out of service there. I think they turned the power to the radios up a little to allow for better signal strength.
