So, I finally rooted my Shift, and I'm thrilled with the result on a lot more levels than I thought I would be.
Only problem is, when I flashed Cyanogenmod 7.0.3.1-speedy, I lost my gps and 3g connectivity. Not sure how to fix it. Is this a known issue or is it a user error (i.e. I did something wrong)? Can I fix it? Did a quick search, didn't find anything, so I'm posting this.
I also noticed that I don't have visual voicemail anymore (not a huge surprise), but I'd like it back. Is there an apk out there to sideload and get it back? And yes, i know about google voice. I prefer sprint's service as of right now.

Thanks for the help everybody!

If you cant get gps to work, nandroid back to the stock ROM, get a gps lock then wipe data and cache and reflash cm7. A reflash could possibly restore your 3g. I dony think there is a way to get vvm working but I'm not positive. Look through the cm7 thread on XDA, i think i remember seeing something about it. You could also try YouMail.

found the vvm apk buried in one of the threads on xda, thanks.
reflashed cm7.0.3.1, 3g still didn't work. the notification bar just indicates that my data connection is 1x. So I tried the shiftygingersense ROM, and that was an utter failure. Had to reboot to a backed up ROM (thank god that was stressed in the how to's). i'd really like to get 2.3 on my phone. could reinstalling rom manager be a help?

Did you try flashing manually through recovery? I know several people have had issue getting that leak to flash through ROM manager.

There are several different Gingerbread ROM over at XDA, just try flash through recovery instead of ROM manager. EVO Shift 4G Android Development - xda-developers

Do i need to wipe data/factory reset before I flash from recovery? or would that be a bad idea?

Any time you flash a fresh ROM you need to wipe data, cache and dalvick cache before flashing. You can wipe dalvick under advanced in recovery. This is only when you flash a new ROM, you usually only need to wipe cache if your just flashing an update.

Try "Fix Permissions" under Advanced if you have Clockworkmod Recovery for the GPS. Where did you find the Visual Voicemail apk?

Do you suppose I need to update my radio to get 3g service on cyanogenmod?

First, make sure you wipe your data and caches before you flash, then if that fails try the permissions fix.

Finally got CM 7.0.3.1 to work! Thanks for all of your help guys! if you're wondering how to get Evdo Rev A (3g) on your shift (apparently they are locked on cdma(1x)), there is a way to fix it from your stock ROM. Then you're golden!

Can you explain in detail how to get 3g back? I really appreciate it :) Do we have to update to a new radio too?
