3G problem: icon but no signal

Out of nowhere I've got a problem. I'm on vacation and have been using wifi/3G with no problems at all. This morning, when leaving for the day I found myself with no 3G at all even though the icon was showing up constantly. Phone rebooted by itself at least twice. Wifi works fine. I tried "activating" it, resetting connections, rebooting it, etc, all to no avail.

When trying to activate, I got a message saying it couldn't connect and to call VM for assistance.

Running stock VM ROM with Xionia Kernal that I installed about 3 weeks ago. Like I said, no problems up to now.

Any ideas?

OK, kinda embarrassed. Today was my end of the month. Apparently my account was in limbo. Never thought to make a phone call and check that out, but an hour ago my account renewed (I had put a $25 top-up card into my account last week) and now 3G works fine.

But here's my question: why did this happen at all? If I am on the $25/mo plan, and I had a $25 balance, then my service should have been seamless, transferring the money from my balance. Did I do something wrong?

I had the same thing happen. The nice VM lady in India told me that automatic renewals are only with a bank account number or credit card. Balances from the VM cash cards have to be manually applied -- either by you or the VM rep you call. Also the date you top off becomes your next renewal date, so if you do it a day early you lose a day of service. And if you try to do it on the renewal date from your phone your data service is already cut off.
