CATphone S41, from Bullitt, on T-Mobile.

Android 8.0.0, the latest for that phone. Updates have ceased, as Bullitt, the manufacturer, went bankrupt.

No notification sound for incoming SMS messages. Incoming emails and calls produce a sound. Worked for years, until last week.

Checked all the obvious stuff and things mentioned in other postings.
  • Not in Do Not Disturb
  • Not in Airplane Mode
  • Message app is the default
  • Messages settings says notifications on. Message notifications checked. Mute off. Sound default (Pixie Dust). Vibrate checked, Popup notifications checked.
  • Sound sliders up.
  • Notifications on for all apps.
  • Changed selected sound to another sound.
  • Bluetooth off.
  • Cleared Messages cache.
  • Powered phone off and on again.
Phone has no Google account, and no Play Store. Uses F-Droid, but it's not rooted.

Any ideas?

Welcome to Android Central! Is the phone connected to a wearable? If so, and if that wearable is also set up to give notifications for messages, that can sometimes intercept the message from the phone and prevent the phone from giving notifications.

When you say it's the default messaging app, you mean that it's the manufacturer's SMS app, and not Google Messages, correct?

Also, you're not just talking about when you have the messaging app open to a particular thread, and then not getting a notification for a message arriving in that thread, right? That's standard for most messaging apps, since the rationale is that the user is already looking at the thread and doesn't need a notification that a message just arrived in it.

Good to hear! Just be aware that when you have the messaging app open to a particular thread, you probably still won't get an audible notification when a new message comes into that thread.
