3g vs. wifi audio oddness

so i discovered something odd today.
when looking at a youtube video via wifi, it looks and works fine.. audio is loud and clear.

but when i turn off wifi and switch to 3g and watch the same exact video, the audio is almost non existent
I mean i have to put the phone right up to my ear and I can barely hear it.

what gives?

Wifi defaults to HQ video quality, 3G defaults to Normal. Try pressing the HQ button when on 3G and see if it helps.

Edit - there is an option in the youtube app, to select "always use high quality audio
when i checked this, the audio was fine via 3g..
odd..
goes from .00001 audio to 100% audio just with this option
