Is there an app that turns on 3G with screen off and 4G with screen on? I don't want it to do anything else ONLY 3G with screen off and 4G with screen on.

I want to retain sync and messages with screen off but don't need 4G speed (and battery drain). With screen on I DO want my 4G blazing.

All the battery saving apps seem to want to disconnect sync or data with screen off. I need them running but no need for 4G speed.

Has to play well with AOSP.

Thanks.

I think Wildman brought this up a while ago as an idea for an app. Not sure if there is an app that would do this though, even if there was I wouldn't expect it to work very well as at a minimum you'd have delays while it switches network mode which in and of itself will probably cause some battery drain. Worse, depending on how frequently it needs to toggle network mode, it could end up forcing you to have to manually toggle mobile data off/on or even airplane mode to get data back. I don't believe these phones are meant to frequently toggle network mode back and forth like that.

Thanks for your kind reply. Currently I do this manually without any problem but I don't doubt that the introduction of automation may produce unsatisfactory results.

During the work day my phone screen may be off for hours and switching to 3G has improved my battery life. I get mad when I turn on the phone, forget it is on 3G, then try a search or something only to find it functions at a snails pace.

Llama is one of my favorites. It does it but I've never been able to get it to work on my G Nexus.

I see nothing like this in llama. I don't want 3G to 4G conversion based on time nor location but strictly due to whether screen is on or off. I see no such setting.

I tried to do this with Tasker a while back, but was unsucessful as well. Seems like a "no-brainer" of a concept (seriously, wouldn't we ALL want this??? 4G is awesome, but standard 3G is fine for background notifications and such), but I honestly don't think there is a way to do it, or at least no existing app that can do it.

Granted, you have to be rooted to use many of the functions, but the Tasker app can be used to program your phone to do pretty much anything that your phone can be commanded to do using tons of different events and triggers...but apparently changing radio settings from LTE to CDMA mode simply is not one of them.

*Full disclosure: This may be very possible with Tasker, and I really haven't spent enough time on it to really rule out the possibility, but as far as I can tell, there certainly was not an easy or intuitive to do it.

Now, I know that some ROMs do have an LTE on/off widget (i.e. SkyRaider Zeus), so I'd imagine if there was a way to code an app to turn LTE on or off with a screen tap...then it wouldn't be impossible to code an app to do what you're talking about...I'm just not aware of any that exist, and unfortunately don't have the skills to build one myself.

If anyone would know you would! Nice to see you still follow the tbolt forum Pete.

Skyraider has a setting where is does exactly what the OP wants.
