Dockrunner is an app that sets your droid to docking mode. I know this is not exactly what you are looking for but its free, works well, and its free. Then you can just make your own stand up holder.

I thought about modding a Storm dock, and getting some of those micro magnets to activate the phone's mode

I do believe Siedio and another company are in the works right now (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), in developing a cradle.
Hopefully whoever decides to develop an alternative cradle choice, other than the Moto/VZW model, makes it capable of taking the Droid while wearing a hard case.

I'm not sure if its every verizon wireless store but there is one by me that is offering 40-70% off all cell phone accessories. Even if its only 40% off that would bring the price down to $18 for the dock. I'm prob gonna pick it up at that price if they have any in stock. Its def worth looking into if anybody doesn't have the dock but wants it.
