With the Pixel 4/4xl announcement coming October 15th, I was wondering who was thinking about pre-ordering and trading in their 3/3xl?
Last year, on announcement day, I was able to pre order the 3xl and trade in my 2xl.
I'm thinking of doing the same this year if the trade-in value of my 3xl allows me to do it without a huge increase in my monthly payment.
Last year was just a minimal increase over my 2xl payment and made my decision easy.
Any thoughts on this?
Am I right that I'll be able to pre-order on 10/15 with a trade-in?
TIA

What will you gain with a 4? I'm still on my 2 with a Camera 3 port, and I can't see that even the 4 has anything to offer except a slight boost in CPU/GPU speed, which I don't need.

dual cameras on the back, face unlock similar to the iPhone (can't be fooled with a picture), and the new Soli touch-free navigation. For me personally, 6gb of RAM vs 4gb in my 3xl. The memory management on my phone can be maddening.

And over the 2 much better water ingress protection.

I expect they'll open preorders during or immediately after the event, and would be surprised if there isn't a trade-in. The question then becomes just how much they are offering. The trade-in values for the original Pixels towards 2nd generations were reasonable - not as much as you might get selling it yourself, but not a huge hit. Trade-in for 2nd gen towards the 3rd was an insult, imo.

In terms of 'need' most people don't really 'need' to upgrade even if they have a 1st gen Pixel. That said...

Things gained: Much improved screen quality (also, smoothness with 90Hz display), 50% more RAM, camera hardware enhancements, Soli, improved water resistance, facial recognition.

Things lost: FPS, dual front firing speakers

Also, while Pixel 2's enjoyed a 2 year warranty since Google doubled the original 1 year to quell what generally turned out to be unfounded concerns over hardware longevity, Pixel 2's and Pixel 3's are coming to the end of their OEM warranty term. Trading in now means you're certain to get (hopefully fair) trade-in value for your working phone (unless you've damaged it), as opposed to later where should something fail out of warranty you could essentially be left with a paperweight.

I'm planning on waiting to see what the trade-in is, and if there are any as-yet-unrevealed benefits of the 4XL that won't come by way of software to my 3XL, which has provided me with absolutely no issues.

I'm really considering keeping my 3XL for now. Well unless there is some crazy trade in deal that I can't pass up.
People keep talking about bad memory/Ram management with 4gb but I am not having this issue.

The RAM issue at this point only impacts people who feel the need to have every app available in the background. I was using the 3XL and a Samsung S10+ with twice the RAM at the same time for several months and never really noticed anything worthy of complaining.

I am just now ordering the 3XL. I took advantage of the sale two days ago for $499 for 128gb at the Google Store. I have a 2XL with all the original UNUSED accessories still in the box, which I am selling to a friend in exchange for $250 and his Pixel XL with an extremely weak battery. I will then trade in the Pixel XL and receive $80 from Google. I also have a $50 store credit.

In total, I am paying $499 and receiving $380 ($250 + $50 + $80), so I am only out of pocket for $119 (not including the sales tax). Even with the sales tax, it's only $44 extra, for a total of $163.

I passed up on the 3XL last year because I didn't see it as enough of an upgrade to justify paying so much, but for $163, it's a go for me.

I fully agree with your reasoning. I traded my Pixel XL when the 2XL came out for the very reason you've stated (the good trade-in value), but I refused to trade in my 2XL for the 3XL when it came out, again for the exact reason you stated. I JUST made the trade for the 3XL (the phone is arriving tomorrow), and I didn't even use my 2XL as the trade-in (I explained it in detail on this thread).
