With the Pixel 4/4xl announcement coming October 15th, I was wondering who was thinking about pre-ordering and trading in their 3/3xl?
Last year, on announcement day, I was able to pre order the 3xl and trade in my 2xl.
I'm thinking of doing the same this year if the trade-in value of my 3xl allows me to do it without a huge increase in my monthly payment.
Last year was just a minimal increase over my 2xl payment and made my decision easy.
Any thoughts on this?
Am I right that I'll be able to pre-order on 10/15 with a trade-in?
TIA
I expect they'll open preorders during or immediately after the event, and would be surprised if there isn't a trade-in. The question then becomes just how much they are offering. The trade-in values for the original Pixels towards 2nd generations were reasonable - not as much as you might get selling it yourself, but not a huge hit. Trade-in for 2nd gen towards the 3rd was an insult, imo.
What will you gain with a 4? I'm still on my 2 with a Camera 3 port, and I can't see that even the 4 has anything to offer except a slight boost in CPU/GPU speed, which I don't need.
In terms of 'need' most people don't really 'need' to upgrade even if they have a 1st gen Pixel. That said...
Things gained: Much improved screen quality (also, smoothness with 90Hz display), 50% more RAM, camera hardware enhancements, Soli, improved water resistance, facial recognition.
Things lost: FPS, dual front firing speakers
Also, while Pixel 2's enjoyed a 2 year warranty since Google doubled the original 1 year to quell what generally turned out to be unfounded concerns over hardware longevity, Pixel 2's and Pixel 3's are coming to the end of their OEM warranty term. Trading in now means you're certain to get (hopefully fair) trade-in value for your working phone (unless you've damaged it), as opposed to later where should something fail out of warranty you could essentially be left with a paperweight.
I'm planning on waiting to see what the trade-in is, and if there are any as-yet-unrevealed benefits of the 4XL that won't come by way of software to my 3XL, which has provided me with absolutely no issues.
