4.0.4 on Galaxy Nexus

I was actually going to start a thread on my experience since installing the 4.0.4 update on my phone, but discussing it here should be just as good!

To start off, I decided to manually install the update on my phone after growing inpatient waiting for the OTA update which wasn't a problem at all. Another thing I have to mention is that my experience on the 4.0.2 Nexus was relatively good compared to most. I've had the phone for about a month and a half now, rooted from day one, and I've never had dropped calls, random reboots or experienced any sluggish performance luckily. However, I did have my fair share of complaints which are among the many that other users have mentioned.

Having been on 4.0.4 for the last two or three days, I have noticed a few much needed improvements. For one, battery has noticeably improved. I get home at around 7pm on the weekdays and usually at about that time my phone is down to somewhere around 20%-30% after moderate use. It's 6:13pm right now in Los Angeles and I have 54% battery left after slightly more use than normal for me which is great. I even turned up the brightness of the display to around halfway and the battery life is still good. Granted, I'm not running hundreds of apps and I have renamed some to not run at all through Root Explorer.

Reception has also improved for me. Where I live, the phone has never had full reception on 4g in the home and would constantly switch off between 3g and 4g prior to the update. Now I've had full reception on a few occasions at home and even more so outside of my house. The phone now also tends to retain 4g signal better than before and doesn't really drop to 3g as often. One thing I did notice about the Nexus when I first got it was that it got uncomfortably hot around the earpiece area and around the camera area in the back. It might have been within normal operational temperatures, but it was still very uncomfortable to be talking on the phone or surfing the web while the phone got somewhat hot. For the most part, this issue seems to be resolved and I suspect that the initial problem was due to the phone's signal strength.

The last issue I can think of at the moment is the phone's long delay in changing the screen from portrait to landscape and vice versa. It is significantly more responsive in that sense as well as in some minimal tasks.

It is a little too soon to really pick out the long term benefits and consequences of the update, but as of now, the update seems to have really polished up the ICS experience and the Nexus experience for that matter.

I forgot to mention that I upgraded the battery from day one to the 2100mah battery. Not sure if that makes a difference but I thought it would be worth mentioning!

I notice quicker screen rotation. Battery life and volume seems the same. I have had 3 microphone cut out calls since the update so it has not fixed the main problem I was having with the phone. Other than telephony reliability the device is great. I only wish it was a phone first and everything else second.;)

Three days in and no dropped signal. fingers are crossed. Signal might be a little better.

My Volume has been much lower since the update for ringtones and messages.
I have the app Volume plus. The volume was much louder prior to the update.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I did the force update trick on Sat and have noticed the volume to be lower and in some cases doesn't seem to audibly ring at all. The battery life has improved as has the signal strength.

After two days with the update, I can tell for sure that my signal strength has doubled, and gone from 3G to 4G in most areas! No more drops so far either.

so after using the phone more i started noticing small things here and there after the update.

battery life has improved. it still drains, but not as fast.

screen rotation is quicker and responsive but i feel like its too sensitive at times to where the phone thinks it should turn and does it for the sake of the phone feeling tilted but it has a quick recovery which is better than before so cant really complain there.

the fading of the autoscreen for dark/light places. its not bad.

theres somewhat of a lag now when i click home sometimes or task button. like the screen is delayed from showing the main foreground contrast to background.

my signals have always been good (im in L.A.) but have noticed a more stable connection (as in more bars = yay)

its a minor update but helped out for the positive. lets just hope google starts rolling updates like these faster :)

My phone has been a lot warmer since I received the update, even when not using it much. Is that something a factory reset could help? I'm on stock.

The forced update didn't work for me but trashing the Google services data has caused my google galaxy nexus yo be screwed up. Google sync not working and gmail gtalk google+ crashing or hanging all the time..

Yes, Google voice messages and YouTube are really low. Other sounds are ok.

Any fixes in the works for this volume issue. Can we revert back to the previous 4.02?

This is not acceptable.

I have also noticed the phone is faster, with some stronger signals. I dont know if it's just me, but does the display seem to be improved? I dont know if my eyes are playing tricks on me, but I'd swear the display looks improved (colors and definition)...anyone else seeing this?

Is it just me or does Google+ no longer permanently "disable"? Every time I fully shut down my phone it comes back as "enabled". Nothing else re-enables itself - all the Verizon bloatware stays disabled...

Received update this morning.. Agree that everything is much smoother, and more fluid and faster. I am still trying different things but I do see that my mobile phone and Wifi data usage history has been wiped. Nothing showing except today.. This is not a big deal but I was surprised. I so far I like this update

Sorry to have to ask but (I don't own a GN yet) what exactly does the low volume problem affect? Ringer/Alerts? Earpiece? Speaker?

It affects the ringer , email and messages volume. I called Verizon and did a Master Reset which resoved the problem.

Thx

Update:
It seems that re installing my sms app (chomp sms) did the trick to correct the sometimes nothing/quiet notifications. Been working correctly for a few days now. Glad I didn't have to do a factory reset.

I get slightly better reception, however my battery life is about the same.
