I was actually going to start a thread on my experience since installing the 4.0.4 update on my phone, but discussing it here should be just as good!
To start off, I decided to manually install the update on my phone after growing inpatient waiting for the OTA update which wasn't a problem at all. Another thing I have to mention is that my experience on the 4.0.2 Nexus was relatively good compared to most. I've had the phone for about a month and a half now, rooted from day one, and I've never had dropped calls, random reboots or experienced any sluggish performance luckily. However, I did have my fair share of complaints which are among the many that other users have mentioned.
Having been on 4.0.4 for the last two or three days, I have noticed a few much needed improvements. For one, battery has noticeably improved. I get home at around 7pm on the weekdays and usually at about that time my phone is down to somewhere around 20%-30% after moderate use. It's 6:13pm right now in Los Angeles and I have 54% battery left after slightly more use than normal for me which is great. I even turned up the brightness of the display to around halfway and the battery life is still good. Granted, I'm not running hundreds of apps and I have renamed some to not run at all through Root Explorer.
Reception has also improved for me. Where I live, the phone has never had full reception on 4g in the home and would constantly switch off between 3g and 4g prior to the update. Now I've had full reception on a few occasions at home and even more so outside of my house. The phone now also tends to retain 4g signal better than before and doesn't really drop to 3g as often. One thing I did notice about the Nexus when I first got it was that it got uncomfortably hot around the earpiece area and around the camera area in the back. It might have been within normal operational temperatures, but it was still very uncomfortable to be talking on the phone or surfing the web while the phone got somewhat hot. For the most part, this issue seems to be resolved and I suspect that the initial problem was due to the phone's signal strength.
The last issue I can think of at the moment is the phone's long delay in changing the screen from portrait to landscape and vice versa. It is significantly more responsive in that sense as well as in some minimal tasks.
It is a little too soon to really pick out the long term benefits and consequences of the update, but as of now, the update seems to have really polished up the ICS experience and the Nexus experience for that matter.
I forgot to mention that I upgraded the battery from day one to the 2100mah battery. Not sure if that makes a difference but I thought it would be worth mentioning!
