The "small cable" has no part in an extended battery case... I think you have that mixed up with a portable (pocket) recharger which is a standalone item. An extended battery case fits on the phone and leaves no cables sticking out. The pic I showed in post #12 is the Mugen case. The pic Lanhoj showed in post#16 is a portable recharger.

Both work the same. Charge them up and bring them along. When your battery gets low, turn them on and they will discharge their stored capacity into your phone's battery. The portable rechargers don't alter the look of your phone and need a cable to attach. A battery case is "always there" as the phone is inserted into it, but it adds bulk to the phone.

Portable rechargers are all over the place and come in various capacities. Some have rechargeable battery packs built in. Others use disposable or rechargeable AA or AAA batteries that can be swapped out. Google it and see...

Battery cases are just being released for the N4. This thread is about the Mugen Battery Case which has 4500 mAh and will recharge an N4 twice. ZeroLemon has just released a battery case which will charge an N4 once, but has a swappable battery pack that can be accessed through a rear door. Rumor is that Mophie will also bring a battery case to market soon.

There is a next gen portable charger that uses the Qi standard. Those will charge by induction OR by USB cable.
